Ext late archery season buck
« on: December 20, 2013, 12:47:14 PM »
So this morning I was reading another post on here about a 4 yr streak of successful elk hunting, as I was replying to his thread I began to think of a streak I was on that was coming to an end.
I first started hunting when I was 10yrs old and I harvested my first deer a small button buck and I have harvested a deer every year since, well that is up until this year. I had some great opportunities at some really nice bucks and passed on some doe's in the early season, and thought my season was finished.
After reading the earlier thread I went in and woke up my daughter for school, got her breakfast, put her in her PJ's cause its PJ day at school, packed her lunch and got her out to the bus. All the time though I was thinking (I can't believe my streak has come to a end). So when I walked back into the house I went searching for the game regs and found that the unit I live in is open until Dec 31st in unit 564 in SWWA the unit I live in. (I had thought they did away with the late extended hunt). So I went in grabbed my bow and a knife and drove up the hill to a small piece of state land. With the snow this morning I thought what better conditions could I ask for.
So I left my house at 9:15 and after fueling up the truck, and getting a bite to eat I arrived at my location just to find someone already parked at the gateSo I decided to drive around to the upper end of the unit. As I went around the corner 200yards from the gate I catch a deer crossing the road. I quickly parked off the road grabbed my bow and stepped into the jack fir. I had only made it 20yard when I see the deer looking at me at 10yards head and neck only straight on. Now I wont say I made the best decision to take a neck shot with a bow, but at 10yards I was confident that he'd never take another step. So I pulled back and placed every pin on his neck and released. With a loud whack and thud at 10am dec 20th 2013, I continued my streak to 28yrs and have put more venison in the freezer for my family.
And I think he's already shed his antlers. don't think he was much bigger than a spike. What yall think?

Sure enough   When your daughter gets home from school, she'll be like what did you do today?   Nice

When my daughter gets home today she's going to be mad that I didn't take her. I'm going to get it!
