Kids got payback.../ w400 review
« on: December 20, 2013, 02:30:45 PM »
Well, for the first time in what seems like years the wife and myself were on the ball. Got all the x-mas shopping done early, and presents wrapped. Today we decided it would be funny to put the kids presents from us under the tree. :chuckle: Well the kids get home and are all excited for the presents being under the tree early. After informing them they cannot break into them until x-mas, the ups guy shows up. With my present, wicked lights w400's . My wife completely understood that when they showed up, I was going to be mounting and playing with them. The kids on the other hand, had vengeance on their minds. They reminded me that they were supposed to be my x-mas present, and needed to be wrapped and put under the tree. :yike: Having a little vengeance of my own, I made them wrap it.Have to admit, it was funny watching the three of them attempt wrapping a present. My key to additional predator hunting is now wrapped up under the tree. All this after going to sleep last night listening to yotes howl, and dreaming of putting these lights to a full test after the fresh snow of today.

As soon as Christmas gets here I need a review.  Light looks awsome !!  Darn your kids for delaying any review that may lead to me spending more money on coyote hunting.  LOL.

Ok, the wife called in a family tradition. We get to open 1 present from the family on Christmas eve. Well no surprise which one I went right for. Hey, don't judge I did let the kids go first  :chuckle: .
I have not had a chance to put these lights through their full paces, and once I get a chance there will be pics posted for anyone following along. The initial quality of the lights them selves seem good, they have a little weight to them that you will notice on the rifle, so may take use of the ability to take them off and on easily. The rail mount you put on the rifle scope, seems a little light honestly and I can see stripping out the threads if you try to torque it down. Other than that my only complaint was a bad battery. I will come back to the battery again and see if I can get it to take a charge but so far no luck so will probably be calling allpredatorcalls.com to see about a replacement. Changing the leds is as easy as advertised, both the lights came with green installed so I swapped one to red to play with. Now according to the book, the battery's take 4-6 hours to fully charge. Who can honestly wait that long when it's dark and you've got a new toy right? So running off what ever charge they came with on 2 of the 4 battery's I grabbed the lights and headed outside. WOW, do not, I say again do not shine the green light on the snow at your feet and look down. Blinding bright. Tonight's conditions were clear, with no moon light and two inches of shinny snow with a icy crust. I did not range anything this evening but hit a few know spots. At 108 yards both the red and the green, easy target id. Red did seem to top out about 150ish and the green continued further. I have a feeling tomorrow night I might just have to take a walk in the woods and see more. I did not have and animals to see how the lights affected them. So far though I believe these lights will live up to the advertising. In the next few days though I will take them out and take photos at known distances and hopefully a few night sets and see how the animals react to them

I will also add, if your considering these lights and have a test idea other than throwing, running them over, dropping cinder blocks on them, etc. Let me know, and  I will try to test it given your requirements. Also one battery fully charged but a slight fog has started to roll in, so this is affecting the max distance due to fog reflecting some light back.

Me, too.  I've been looking at them, but haven't sprung yet.  I got a Primos 350 yard light with battery pack, and don't really like it.

Tonight I was hoping to update this thread with photos of a dead dog. But the fog has rolled in and with the lights you maybe have fifty yards of visibility. Took my oldest son and ran around to a few of our spots, but no luck foggy everywhere. I did range a few of my areas that I looked at on Christmas Eve, longest view where I would call target id able was with the green at 227 yards. Red was 178 yards. I have not tested the white honestly, due to dunno if I will use it.  The battery life seems to be holding well at least 30 minutes of run time on one light so far with out noticeable dimming.

White is the brightest on them for sure. I have several of them. They are very sold lights.

I knew you had a set of wicked lights but did not know which model you had. So far I would recommend these lights highly. Have used the promos 350 and it does not even come close to the w400. I looked at a lot of lights before buying these. Came very close to buying a sub zero, but end the end I could buy three wicked lights for the price of one sub zero. I am happy with my decision.

You will like them for sure. I like mine a lot. They have there place in my lights but don't replace them all. You will also see a pretty good jump in battery life why running the brighter white light over the red.

I read an article about some guys that were videotaping coyote hunts, and the colored lights didn't agree with the video cameras, so they started using white lights and saw no difference in the coyote's reaction to the white light.  I agree the Primos light is a big disappointment.  I have a gun-mounted 200 lumen Surefire light, and it seems to shine about as far as I can see--Which isn't that far!  :chuckle:

I've always thought that white light spooked animals? So you wanted either red or green. :dunno:

I read that as well. They are members on predator masters. I have found little use for a red or green. I have found either the coyotes have been educated to lights or not. Once they have been shot at with a light, I don't think color matters :chuckle: I have heard red works better with hogs.
