Stampede Info?
« on: November 10, 2008, 01:11:16 PM »
Anybody got any intel that they'd be willing to share about deer in the Stampede unit?  I'm tryign to improve the odds, and lower the miles (on me and the car) for this weekend.  Anything is helpful.
Thanks,
Erich

id head up jim creek and get back up on blazed ridge and hunt down towards windy gap/mt. clifty. lots of fresh cuts up at the end of the road. (near where that helicopter went down last year) should be a good skiff of snow up there now. i hunted that area a lot when i was kid and i remember we did pretty well. quit hunting up there about 10 years ago cause of the indians, people, logging and just flat out lack of deer. i still ride bikes all over hell and back all through that country in the summer. never see many deer, but always a crap load of elk and goats. good luck.

I've hunted the Stampede unit for years and I know it fairly well. I was elk hunting in it this year, archery and rifle(drew a multi-season tag), and I didn't see one deer. I have seen a few great bucks in the past, but it has been several years. In my opinion, you should go somewhere else. You could easily go all four days and not see a single deer.

Thanks for the input/advice.  Kind of what I figured.  I spent some time around there earlier this year, and a bit last year, more in the Taneum.  Didn't see much of anything.  Looks like I should burn the gas and head to the NE.
Thanks again.
