Roosevelt Elk Guide

Hello everyone!  I am in the army and home on R&R from Afghanistan.  I will be back in May and was inquiring if anyone could recommend a good guide/outfitter for roosevelt elk in western Washington?

Well, I purchased a bowtech in Afghanistan, and would prefer to bow hunt, but if needed I can do rifle or muzzleloader.

there is one outfitter for roosevelt elk advertising in the back of bugle magazine has a outfitters liscence # based out of olympia

Jim Mansfield (long time river/fishing guide) used to guide elk hunts out of Forks area. Pretty successful from what I remember. Might search to see if he still guides.

You really don't need a guide just need to ask a few farmers permission and do a little scouting and you will find a good spot.  Don't use Barbour out of graham horrible group to associate with and way too expensive for his style of hunting see other posts about him on this site.  Really alot of ground to hunt that has elk.  What is your experience level of hunting elk and do you like to hike a long ways?

There is a Eva Shockey thread on here.  She used a local West side guide.  That might/could/possibly be of choice.

for early bow or early muzzy, you mainly just need a bugle and a cow call and be willing to cover some ground in a hurry.  Some one already mentioned calling Jim Mansfield in Forks.  Another to call is Mike Zavadlov in forks.

Stay away from Olympic Mountain, and Barbour if you don't want to sit in a box watching a pile of apples...
Your best bet is to ask someone on this forum to join their camp. 
There are few Roosevelt Elk guides in Washington, only 1 offering hunting on the peninsula registered with Washington Outfitters and Guides Association.
 I know of a couple outfitters/guides that are not members, it is not a requirement.
I actually was surprised that there are not more, until I discovered the difficulties involved in setting up an Outfitter/guide service.
Although a guide license is not required, Insurance is required, along with a business license and any permits required by the landowner (including DNR)
combined with the difficulty of CONSISTENTLY having access, and low success (relative) of hunting Roosevelt Elk, guiding for them is definitely a challenge.

My friend has great success in the Winston Unit. I am going to take his advice and start scouting the area. I am new to hunting so I take all the advice I can get and pass it on to others. I like the help and I will help others if I can. I hope this points you in the right direction.

Thanks everyone!  I have experience, am in good shape, and dont mind putting in the hours scouting.  I just haven't been able to close the deal yet.  I have only hunted during modern firearm, and see lots of elk, just nothing legal during the season.  I should have enough points to get a multi season tag, and i think I will just continue to pick some of you smart folks brains when I get back in May.  I appreciate all the feedback and help.

Just remember Winston is probably going to require acess permits like all the other tree farms are. So unless you are willing to spend the 200 to hunt there I wouldn't waste my time scouting it.
