Paulina Unit Oregon
« on: December 26, 2013, 12:55:43 PM »
Anybody have any experience with deer hunting in the Paulina Unit here in Oregon? Pretty much my back yard for now and likely going to hunt the General Bow Season in 2014. Looks like the terrain splits from Lodge Pole to desert. The hunting in the trees would be a way different style than I am used too.

If it's your backyard you'll surely gather vast knowledge between now and the opener. Maybe find some sheds? There are big bucks to be had that's for sure!! If all else fails try the national forest closer to the Fort Rock unit.

Yeah, I took my 18 mo old son out Saturday for a mountain road drive to start learning the area. Spotted a dandy buck in the sage near the fort rock area. Put the kid in the Kelty pack  and started to creep in to get close enough for a decent picture, he did good being quiet until I set up the tripod and scope for a picture then he went to hollering, it was a good time with him.  :)

will definitely be out from now till then.

A lot of those bucks that you see down by fort rock migrate there this time of year. I know that during the rifle season the farther south in the unit you go the more hunting pressure. I like the badlands area myself. The Badlands is all wilderness, sage and juniper and holds good bucks and you'll see very few people hunting. and also check out the NE side of the unit along the crooked river, below Prineville res. great area to glass and pick apart the hill side. once again no hunting pressure.

It is not what it once was, but is anything? My mom shot a 23" 4x4 this year down there, one of only 2 bucks they saw all season. She lives in Bend, my step dad and her have been hunting this area since the mid 80's.
They made the Newberry crater area a national monument, I think this will help with the deer numbers a little since there is no hunting in there now.
A few years ago I remember an article in a hunting magazine about a kid from Bend who shot a 35" wide 4x4 up near the Monument, so there are a few bruisers in there.
