First year elk hunting don't want your spots just some advice

So I have deer hunted and also a lot of waterfowl but am wondering what you guys think. I have my rifle that will have zero problem taking down an elk I also have my bow that as we all know with a well places shot will kill an elk. Since this is my first year I'm trying to decide what to buy my tag in?? Thought? Success story's? Thoughts ?? Thanks guys!

Pick an area your close to so you can scout, scout, and scout some more. That will be the deciding factor in your success!

As someone who's relatively new to elk hunting, I would say whichever guarantees you lots of time in the woods.  Bowhunting elk is not as intimidating as it sounds but of course it will take more commitment to be successful.

I had zero bowhunting experience this past fall and put six days in the woods and had legal elk within range three times.  I am not bragging, I'm saying it's very doable.

look at the multiseason tag.  It is a draw tag, but it would allow all three seasons and both sides of the state.  More time in the woods usually means more chances to cross paths with a bull.  Apps have been on sale for a bit now, and you can enter into the computer now too.

Knowing what I know now, I would say I would start with archery if you are already comfortable with a bow. The reason I say that is the longer seasons which should equate to more chances to get out and learn. A little depends on what side of the state you are hunting but if you are planning on the eastside then I say bow even more because then it opens up cows on top of the longer seasons.

Whichever you choose be sure to get off of the beaten path and put in lots of time scouting.  Elk do not like vehicle pressure!

First you have to know your prey. Where they live, what they eat, where are the escape routes.  Scout, scout, scout.

Killing an elk is Washington is no gimmie.. Its a trial and errors sort of thing.

I know on the Eastside as soon as the snow melts I am in the hills.  I myself have hunted the same area now for 28 years and I am still finding spots I never knew were there.

Study the elk, then simple decision bow or rifle..

Find someone who will welcome you to their camp, hunting elk on your own is a challenge.
Getting one off the ground and out of the woods by yourself is even more of a challenge, if not downright impossible for a first timer to do w/o ruining a LOT of meat.
