Looking for a full capture rest
« on: January 03, 2014, 03:15:00 PM »
I want to change the rest on my bow from a trophy taker to something full capture.  I like the QAD ultra-rest hunter, but I'm also considering the trophy ridge revolution.  I'm always open to suggestions in the 50 dollar range.  Looking for opinions on rest and your experiences with these. I also plan to sell the trophy taker when I replace it so I'm willing to swap if someone wants it.
Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27:3

QAD HDX is the favorite of all rests I've ever shot/owned. By far the easiest to tune too

Obviously Trophy Taker has served you well. Why not stay with Trophy Taker Full capture or the smack down. They are a little more money but very dependable,Great Customer service .

Another vote for the QAD HDX.  Can't speak for the new TT, as I haven't tried one.  However, I've seen the TR Revolution in action a few times, and they were all removed for QAD's.

I would agree with DR DEATH. The guys that swear by QUAD have not tried the Trophy Taker. It has been on the market the longest and is more widely used world wide than any other fall away.

the QADhdx is not $50 or even close. QAD does make a $60-70 version but the springs are weaker and smaller locking spool.

Depends on what each hunter is looking for.  I like the revolution because I walk with a nocked arrow and the QAD had too much "slop" in it for my liking.  It did fully retain my arrow but my arrow moved upwards of 1/2", bouncing around inside the rest.  I don't have that problem with the Revolution.  The arrow stays more or less tight, moving around less than 1/8".  add a little mole skin to it and the "slop" gets even less and is darn near silent

I have mixed emotions about walking around with a nocked arrow. I do not. I figure if I hunt with a bow I am supposed to be stealthy and see them first. If not I should hunt with a rifle. Even then I do not have a round in the chamber. Just my opinion. I do not feel you should base the opinion on how your arrow rides in the reast while walking.

Remember a few years ago in the Winston unit when the guy had an arrow nocked while walking behind his buddy. His buddy turned around in a hurry and got impaled and died. It was on Laphan road right by WrongWays house. Like I said just my opinion

If someones hunting morality and self imposed rules won't let them walk with a nocked arrow, why would they look at a full containment rest in the first place?  Seems to me that any rest would work just fine if you weren't going to nock an arrow until you're ready to pull it back.

I remember that Winston story too, and many others like it but because someone else was so stupid as to walk within an arrows length of his buddy with a nocked arrow means that I can't or shouldn't?  By that thinking, I shouldn't drive a car because somone else drove too close to someone else and rear ended them.

I walk with an arrow nocked and therefore I based my rest purchase 95% on how the arrow rides while walking because it is important to me.  The OP didn't say if he walks with a nocked arrow or not.  If he does, the Revolution holds an arrow tighter than the QAD does.  "just my opinion"

I walk with arrows knocked specially in prime area's for cats. I also almost never walk behind my hunting partners and never walk with a broadhead sticking straight out. Always to the ground or facing behind me, Just like a loaded gun.

This topic is about full capture rests.  While TT fall away rests were one of the first on the market, they didn't come out with the full capture until more recently.  I have liked the TT's I've owned though.

I dont use a full capture and rarely walk with an arrow nocked. But if I have to move a bit after spotting the animal and getting ready I will travel with an arrow on. I just put my finger over the arrow to hold it on the shelf. I use a standard tt smack down. Never have understood why a person would really need a full containment arrow rest. I've never dropped my arrow off the shelf...  :dunno:

Have used both QAD HDX and Ripcord Code Red
I believe the HDX took a tiny bit more tinkering to get it spot on, but after that, it is flawless.
They are now making the HDX for specific bows, but those are spendy.  Love that the HDX stays up in place on slow let down.

Ripcord is a great rest for the price.

Bought a Revolution for my son in law for Christmas 2012, not a bad rest for the price, but I'm glad I bought it for my son in law instead of me.  :)
Seems to work ok, but kinda big and clunky.  Guess I like stuff that is compact and efficient.

Have yet to try a limb driven rest, gonna do that some day.

Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

Mine is working out really well too.  It's the best archery equipment change I've made since I upgraded to a faster bow and I'm shooting more consistently than ever.  I paid $40 for mine.

I'm not nearly an experienced as most of these guys, but my Ripcord Code Red works great. Setup and adjustment is quick and easy.

Its also worth noting that they have excellent customer service should you ever need support - I lost a piece to my rest, and they hd a new one out to me within a few short days.

Since my last post, I have a Ripcord SOS on a new bow.  Still miss the rest staying in place onlet down as on the HDX and the SOS makes a fairly loud audible click when I draw the bow.  My HDX is virtually silent.

I have one of the very first SOS rests.  No click that I have noticed.  Wonder what they changed!  Might have to call them and ask about that.

I have not liked the Ultra Rests since they started the whole Lock Down feature.  Though I have decided I like the Original Red Ripcord better than the SOS.

Upon putting a fair number (hundreds) of arrows through the SOS, the click is barely audible.  Not sure what changed, but I can't hear it at all without my hearing aids and it's just barely audible with them in.  :chuckle:
Ya might not wanna go by what I hear.
