fur handling question
« on: January 05, 2014, 03:09:06 PM »
Kind of a rookie question, but other than beavers and muskrats, what animals do you keep the feet with? I've some guys that will keep them on coyotes and some that don't. Is there a standard for fur buyers?

The reason for leaving the feet on cats and yotes is it leaves the option open for selling to taxidermy.

Taxidermist is one but the other ones that like the feet on are the Mountain Men clubs and Furriers that make custom hats for people.  If you head to these people ask them what they wold like.  Some of them like the feet on raccoons, skunks as well as bobcat, fox and coyote even badger with the claws on look pretty good at a mountain men hat.

If the fur is going into the fur market there is no need to leave the feet on any animal. If it is likely to be sold as for taxidermy or as a wall hanger that would be the only reason to keep the feet on.
NAFA and FHA specifically say not to leave the feet on furs.
The exceptions to that would be animals like wolves and wolverine that probably will not go into a garment.

What do wolves and wolverines get turned into?

Some get made into trim but any good ones will probably end up as wall hangers/rugged.
