WetSide AR glass...
« on: January 15, 2014, 03:35:46 PM »
Just picked up my first AR, and it is destined to be a yote gun. Just curious what sort of glass setup you guys use on this side of the mountains?

Fixed, or variable?
Scope or red dot?

I would really like a 4x acog, as I've used a buddies quite a few times and it seems perfect, however those stinkin trijicons are a bit out of my price range.

Any other close alternatives?

Check out LUCID. The guy used to work at Brunton and started his own business. He's out of Riverton Wyoming I believe. I have one with the 3x on it.

This scope is like an ACOG unlike the others mentioned.

Used to have a Millet SDM 1x4 illuminated donut reticle on mine. Not bad for closer and darker ranges. Decent glass. Think it was around $250ish maybe....

If you plan to use it for Wetside Coyotes you may want something that starts with lower magnification.  1-4x, 1.5-6x, 2-7x, or 2-8x.  Really no need for 10x+ for that application.  Better field of view and fast acquisition yet still plenty of magnification for Coyote size targets at the top end.

I have an Elite 4200 1.25 x4 Ill. Dot on one of my rifles and  an Alpen 1.5x6x Ill. Dot on another and like them both for out here.  Mine are on bolt guns but they would work well on an AR also.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

For Westside an mostly closer shots look at the Leupold Hogplex scopes.  They are pretty nice and you can get one with a red dot for roughly $450. No red dot and they run about $280.

Dunno if this counts but I go with a 552 Eotech on a Stag 6.8spc...

Figure where I go everything is close enough a holographic sight, if I really need something longer range I do have a Nikon 3x9 on a Larue mount I can swap it out with. Haven't needed it yet  :)

EDIT TO ADD: If you want to try a red dot and not pay out the dingleberry for it, primary arms makes a decent one for not that many $$$!

Ordered this scope a few days ago for the same purpose.

http://www.blackbearsportinggoods.com/Eterna_1_5_5x20_Rifle_Scope_p/ellbrufe15520.htm

Limited reviews but for that price I'm willing to take a flyer...
