I guess with no response last night ill fill some dead space with a story. I hunt, as a lot of you know all over the sedro area eastward. There’s lots of nothing up there  ;) anyhow i decided to hit the hills to find a bear/cat/dog the day after deer season closed. On the drive up i decided to hit an area with lots of cat, dog and deer sign but there aren't all that many bears in the area. Mainly it was a good excuse for a scouting trip for archery deer season. I did have my predator calls, a spotting scope, binos, hunter orange(though not required) and my rifle.

I was up in the timber and clearcuts glassing for most of the afternoon. The day was pretty slow and disappointing in that I only saw a couple doe. I wrangled with the idea of predator calling but by the time I talked myself into it darkness was setting in. Instead i took of my boots put them in the bird bag of my hunter orange and set off for the truck. (Sometimes when its raining and nasty you just have to do something dumb and get your feet wet)

After a mile or so of stealth walking I was down to flat land. Being as it was it was getting dark so I gained speed because I didn’t have a headlamp with me. When I finally had my truck in view I saw a panel truck parked next to it. This was strange because in all the times I have hiked into this area I have only seen locals taking dirt bikes around the gate and I didn’t see anyone on the way down and no one had walked the road up behind me.  Since my feet were wet and cold all I really only thought about getting to my truck, put on a new pair of socks and go home. Just as I was unloading my gun something behind me scared the living crap out of me.

Coming out of the wood and directly at me was the driver of the panel truck. Before I could even say, “hey man, you just scared me half to death,” he practically charged me, cussing me out and mainly calling me a F(you know what)  deer poacher. I was totally taken back by this. I told him no way was i even close to a poacher, and that I was bear and cat hunting. I told him i had an archery deer tag that I planned on using later in the year. He still didn’t believe me. He said that he only saw this truck after season and that I had been up there before. I told him that I have had been up there a couple of times in August and the day before or last day of MF deer season. I pretty much had to explain how I hated poachers and couldn’t stand people driving around gates before he finally eased up.

After making me soil my self I found out he was a pretty nice guy and that there have been some problems up in that area and that the Gamie’s haven’t done anything about it(His Story). I don’t know if these allegations are true but I tend to believe him. Because of his actions. Before exchanging numbers he showed me the deer his son got that week. And all I can say is wow. His kid was 13 and the buck had as many points. It was a dandy. He also said a guy I had seen up there the day before pulled out a big guy too. I just hope there are some animals left by the time I get a chance.

After I told him once,"I wasn't a poacher." And reminded this wasn't his property. I'd say you better call the Game Dept. Or the Cops. Because I'm cold and wet and going to sit in my pick-up and worm up. You don't have to say crap to someone like that. No one, and I mean no one has the right to jump anyone in the woods, even through they have had problems. :yike: And in my opinion nice guy's don't jump people before they don't find out whats going on. :twocents:

Pretty scary. In my opinion only a fool would surprise someone in the woods like that...especially if you are carrying a high power weapon.

In defense of the guy in the panel van: coming out of the woods barefoot and without a deer is a sure sign of a career poacher  :chuckle:

A peculiar virtue in wildlife ethics is that the hunter ordinarily has no gallery to applaud or disapprove of his conduct. Whatever his acts, they are dictated by his own conscience, rather than that of onlookers. It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of this fact.

100% agree with PA BEN  ,it is  very stupid to try jump on guy without any evidence . If he suspect something ,then he should call Game Dept ., but no jumping at you and even worse cussing.I be very piss off ,if someone try cuss me . :twocents:

I think I would have been looking for a pair of shorts as well! I unload my rifle at the truck. Remember the movie Deliverance?  :o
