So I got engaged a little before Christmas and my girlfriend, now fiance, decided I should get something shiny too. I just picked it up yesterday. It's a S&W 686 plus. I love it. Compared to the Ruger revolvers I'm familiar with, this trigger is like butter. I'm going to shoot it tomorrow. I was thinking about getting some nice grips in light colored exotic hardwood. I also need a good low slung, gunfighter style holster for it in the woods. I would love to know if anyone has any good ammo recommendations for it or other little tips for getting the most out of it. I can't wait to shoot it.

Oh yeah, can I take that internal safety out of it without voiding my warranty?

I would not recommend the pretty grips or low slung holster for an actual working gun. Those grips get slick when wet, Hogue grips will suit much better though they don't look as nice. Low slung holsters are a pain in the ass, cross draw holsters are much better for hiking and backpacking.

Ammo has lots of good options.

It's kind of both. I certainly want to actually use it, but the reason I picked it is because it's timeless. I like polymer autos as much as the next guy, but I didn't want to get something that would be obsolete with the next tech breakthrough. I wanted this one to be a "pass it down to the next generation" type piece. I do get what your saying about the grips though. But I've seen some that look super classy.

I wouldn't have thought that. I usually carry my CZ auto on a shoulder harness in the woods. I would think that the low slung holster, right where the heel of your hand naturally hangs would be the ideal position for it. Why don't you like them?

i like my pistols on the left side while hunting.  i find my rifle slung over my rt shoulder interferes with a pistol also worn on the rt.

Take a look at Ahrends Grips   http://www.ahrendsgripsusa.com/  I prefer wood because it doesn't catch on the inside liners of my jackets and I find finger grooves make them just as easy to grip and hold as rubber.

That is one of the good reasons. For me I also don't like the holster and gun hanging off my leg, in the thick stuff I am constantly catching it and stripping blueberry branches with it. In cross draw I can use both hands in what for me is an easier and more natural movement and the gun is protected by my body. It also fits under a hip belt pretty well. I have not used a low slung holster that does not restrict some of my movements or get in the way when really stretching and doing what happens while not hiking on a trail.

There are som nice checkered and partially checkered wood grips out there if you look around. I usually switched to the Hogues because they fit me perfectly and I thrash nice grips.

Sounds like she's a keeper for sure!! That's a great pistol!! I have the same one. I put some Houge grips on it, and open carry it on my right hip in the woods. Likely the most favored firearm in the safe for both me and the wife!

nice revolver, congrats. the only "internal safety" on that smith- aside from the internal hammer block which you should never mess with, and will never know is there, is the key lock that comes on these new ones- unless you decide to lock it with the key- it should never be an issue, as it really cant be activated without the key.. my snub has one, but I just ignore it..
