Well..... I found my 8wt snapped in half in my garage. I have no idea how it happened, but with 3 other people tossin stuff around in there, somehow my rod got violated.....

anyway, it was a cheap Chinese rod, I think I paid like 50$ for it, but now I'm after a new rod.

I'm thinking of something 8-12 wt, something capable of cutting through the wind. Keep in mind I primarily a saltwater fly guy, and I like to cover ALOT of water. I used to have a double handed 9wt that I borrowed for a while and I liked it, but I was thinking of getting a 10, 11, or 12 just for the sake I huck a lot of streamers, and it's often windy

What would you guys recommend for under 500$ ? I noticed the reddington vapen red, but I've also looked at the TFO clouser rod.... What's good?

I own several Sage rods, all different weight, and could not be happier with them. I've tried lots of other brands but still prefer the Sage.

I would hit the local Fly shops and try them all out, don't look at the price tags until you find the one you like and can load up and cast well.

I 2nd the sage, I have. 6 and 8 I love, traded away a 4 and regretted it ever since.

Yes, Sage rocks for sure. But for the most bang for your buck, TFO is hard to beat. TiCr is a great model if they still have it. Has been a few years since I've looked.

Also, I'm not crazy about going above an 8wt unless you are targeting huge kings or something... I fast action rod in 9.5 or 10ft length is probably what you are looking for. I'd stick with 8wt and look into lines such as the Rio Outbound that can shoot line a mile when you master your double haul.

Sage is great if your willing to spend the money. I fish an orvis access 10 wt and love it. I fish lingcod and salmon both with the rod. It's cheaper then most sage and fishes just as well as a safe rod. I would go out and cast as many as you can till you commit to buying any of the rods.

Went to holiday, the reddington dually wasn't bad.... I'm gonna go with a switch, that's decided, but soooo many choices....

Anybody going to the fly fishing expo?

Build one yourself. You'll save a few hundred bucks usually, and it isn't hard to do. I also like Sage, but I haven't built one in about 10 years. I'm sure technology has advanced a lot.

Get one with a lifetime warranty in case this happens again. You never know when a tip will break.

I think anything bigger than a 10 weight is so darn heavy it'd ruin you casting all day on a trip. What are you fishing for?
I can throw meaty 6-8" long bunny leeches on a 10' fast 6 weight GL Loomis GL4. I can also "switch" cast with it even though it's not technically a switch rod. I use it a lot for summer steelhead and lake fishing for the bigger rainbows in a tube or pontoon on lakes like Dry Falls or Lenice. I did a bunch of fly fishing in the Sea of Cortez with a 2 handed 12 weight and that thing will just tire you out it's so dang heavy. A fly rod is one of those things you really need to test drive to know if it works for you....a lot like a bow. I'd go to a quality fly shop where you can cast their rods and see what you like. Sage, Loomis, Orvis, Redington, TFO. All good. TFO is a great company and really a great deal for the money. Look at Allen Fly Fishing too. I like their rods.

I've done a lot of fly fishing. Mainly for trout and such but am just getting into the saltwater( which is awesome). I've fished sage, redington, lamiglas, st. Croix and had some fun with all but none really impressed me too much. My buddy that fishes the salt put a rod made by Echo in my hand and I fell in love with it. I could do no wrong with it. I didn't want to give it back either! Look them up. They are made in Vancouver ,Wa. Killer rods!

If you're set on a switch rod I'd recommend a TFO Deer Creek Switch. I've got a 7wt setup that I really like, although I use it mainly for swinging flies and not overhand casting. We're not that far from each other, if you want to give it a test drive sometime let me know.

My go to single handed saltwater rod is an Echo 3 Saltwater 6wt or a Reddington Crosswater 8wt, depending on conditions. I've tried the Switch rod on the beach, but overhead casting it just wasn't my thing.

I second the Sage. I got a 9' #7 rod and reel outfit 15 years ago, and like it, but an 8' rod was better for the brushy creek I often fished. Haven't flyfished in a long time, and used to tie my own flies when my hands were steadier.

I own a TFO 9wt and a St Croix 6wt. even tho the TFO is a heavier rod, it actually feel lighter and cast like a dream, The TFO also feels much more sensitive. If I were to buy another, I will have no problem going back to TFO. I would also like to cast a Loomis one of these days, Sage is a bit too much for me, but maybe some day I will start looking at them.

First choice would be Sage, second would be Redington, who is made by Sage... both excellent choices in one-handed or switch options.

I personally stay away from bamboo, too much hassle. I have sage, loomis, Winston, etc. , but I like echo. for $200 in a 10 footer you can throw it as far as any other rod. you can spey cast it also. if it breaks you are out $200 not $800. of course they do have warranties. I also have some tfo's and they are a fine rod. mike w
