Desert Archery Buck
«

First off I have to start by thanking WAPITIHUNTER and my brother-in-law's friend Glen who pointed us in the right direction to make this hunt a success, and especially my brother-in-law who went with me and shared in the amazing experience. I killed this buck on Saturday morning after missing a 4X4 that would have went 170" on Friday at what I ranged was 63 yards (now I think the sage that got in the way was 63 yards after the miss
). We packed in on Thursday night and set up a tent among the dunes in area we had seen some deer and a good buck on the Sunday before the archery season started. After missing the above mentioned buck on Friday and seeing one other shooter with no luck of reaching him, we decided when we returned that night we would hunt the morning in an area we had seen some other deer the previous day. We headed out to the dune at daybreak where we had spotted the deer from the day before and after glassing for a few minutes we spotted this buck moving through the sage. We watched this buck close distance on us before bedding down on a knoll around 400 yards from us. After a brief discussion of whether or not I wanted to take a 3 point, I decided to attempt the stalk. The buck was bedded down next to a small 1x2 and during the stalk I was able to watch the small buck to keep my bearing. When I was approx. 80 yards away I lost sight of the small buck do to a slight depression in the ground between us, so I stayed the coarse, as I reached the rise where the deer were bedded and the spot I thought they should be, I found no deer. As I was standing on the edge of the rise wondering what went wrong something catches my eye to the right of me, I look over and the 1x2 is still bedded and staring right at me, I look to his right and see antlers in the sage. I reach up with the range finder and ranged the small buck at 30 yards. I clip on my release and move forward enough to get the small buck to stand, as he stands I come to full draw, and as he stands so does the big buck. The buck presents me with a slight quartering away shot, which I proceeded to put right through his heart. After the shot I walked onto rise and watched as he went 60 to 70 yards into sage and fell over dead
. I have killed many deer with a rifle and a couple with a bow, but none short of my sons first buck last season have been more gratifying than this. To kill a mule deer buck like this, even a 3 point, with a bow after a great stalk into 30 yards and an anchoring shot through the heart, what an experience. I don't think I will ever be the same
The buck measures 28" outside.

Congratulations Brute. I am so happy that you got one. And a Whopper to boot. You did real good considering the success rate for the archery tag in that unit is pretty dismal.
Was it as difficult as you thought it was going to be? Oh and by the way that one dwarfs the one i shot in there. Good job!!!!!

Congrats,
A beautiful buck and a great story. Any buck with a bow is a trophy. I hope you get it mounted, because the story as well as the buck make for a memory that will come to mind every time you look at it!
