Dick Cepek Mud country or Hankook MT Dynapro OWL tires????
« on: February 12, 2014, 08:43:37 PM »
Just wore out a set of BF Goodrich All-Terrains. Had a set of BFG Mud-Terrains before that. I'm really looking hard at a set of Dick Cepek Mud Country's. I also like the Hankook MT DynaPro OWL. I'm leaning towards the Cepek's. The Cepek's I'll have to order but the Hankook MT's can be had locally from several different places.

Any of you ever run Dick Cepek's? I would like any input or options you may have about them.

These will be 315/ 75R16.

I haven't ran either of those. I have ran the Toyo MT and the Nitto MT with great luck. Have you looked at these?

I run the Hankook tires exactly like you want. Good mileage, I rotate them and keep the air up. Order them from Discount Tire online and you'll save a ton of money. I bought 4, 285x70x17 10 ply tires delivered to my door for $825. I paid Les Schwab $100 to  mount and balance them. I saved $500.
This is my 2nd set.

Ive run both the Cepek Mud Terrains an the Fun Coutries back in the early 80's. wasnt happy with the mud countries, but the fun countries in 40" were the bomb! Ok in mud, but the majority of the time in dirt and snow, they were the better tire, hands down!!!they were also much quiter on the asphalt, and the variable DC sidewall lugs really grabbed. They are patterned after the old Norseman radial..

Hmmmmm. You must get a better deal online. I got a quote from them yesterday(Locally)for the Hankook Mt's and it was 1300.00. I'll check it out, I have a bit of time. Me and my 2500HD have a hot date this weekend with some Moog upper ball joints and a Idler Arm.

Online is the only way. I got a quote from Les for Toyo MTs for $1300 also. Toyo's suck in the snow. I've driven hundred's of thousand's of miles in semi trucks and pickup, so I kinda have gripe on tires. I've spent many thousand's of dollar when I had semi truck to put rubber on. I'm really picky about my tires.

What is your purpose for these tires? Strictly off-road? Highway that look cool? If you want tires for mud I would never buy hankooks they don't clean out at all.  I just bought Goodyear duratracs for my truck before we got dumped on last weekend and I love them! I run 315/70/17 and they were right around $1400.

If you do a lot of mountain roads and trash a tire how easy will it be to replace it. ?

I actually ordered 8 ply tires for my side x side from Discount. They were faulty from the manufacturer and I was sent a new tire and told to keep the faulty tire for a spare. I had the tire in 3 days. Zero questions.

If you can go a little bigger and don't mind changing wheels the 37x12.5x16.5 Humvee tires are hard to beat. You can usually find them used in various condition for $100-150 My brother loved them on his F350 and said they wore ok on the logging roads. You may not be able to stuff that large of tire on your ride but its worth taking a look at.

Ended up doing a little shopping around locally, a little price matching and bartering and I got a smoking cash deal on a new set of 315/75R16 BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain KM2's.👍

Ran me 350.00 bucks for my full alignment, needed several new shims and shim pins replaced. Those lifts are hard on stuff if you don't stay on top of things.

The KM 2's should give you longer life and better wear than either of the other two choices.

BFG is owned by Michelin tire and they spend almost 2x as much on R&D as a percent of gross sales than thier nearest competitor... I'm going off the top of my head but i think GDY is 2.8% and Mich is 5.6% ????

Thier old Mud terain tire was SO popular i wonder why they went away from that design... Thier all season wear really well and i've heard good things about the KM2's.

You were smart to have yourrig aligned. Alignment, proper air pressure and rotation will extend the life of your tire a LOT.

I really liked the original Mud-Terrain , this is the first set of KM's I have run. I had BFG All-Terrains on it last and I really liked them. The KM's are a bit noisier but I like the ride. I took it to the best alighnment place I could find. I'm tierd of wearing tires.

I am a believer in annual alignment or at least every 20,000 miles (20k is annual for me).  ball joints and rotations every 3000 miles.  I started getting 10,000 more miles per set when I started paying attention to these factors more frequently.

Just before the tires went on I replaced both wheel hubs, both upper ball joints and the idler arm. It's nice and tight. Normally I don't pay much attention to it, I'm going to stay on top of it and see how much more I can get out of this set.

Still the smart azz remarks, I haven't replied to the last 20 or so. You had mentioned the word"  Instigator " in one of your smart Azz PM's. Might want to look that definition up. I'm not your buddy , your pal or your friend.  I think it's best we just stay away from each other like the Mods suggested. I'm good with it, maybe you can go find someone else to follow around for entertainment. I want nothing to do with you. That's about as crystal clear as I can make it.
