The early opening is better for those who bait Elk,  shortly after the 1st they move off the bait stations so there's only a very short window for that.
This year the Elk moved off the bait stations early and left a lot of guys sitting on empty bait stations,  I waved to a few cameras  :chuckle:

If they do move the season into the rut I'd prefer that obviously as that's the quintessential Elk hunt.  It's always irritated me that we only get to hunt the early pre-rut.
I'm defiantly in favor of a later season.  What archer doesn't want to hunt screaming bulls?   Popping one out of a tree stand while it's eating apples seems anti-climatic,  but you got a freezer full so I won't knock it.  My freezer doesn't have any Elk in it  :'(

In my opinion it is borderline unethical to Bow Hunt far from Roads like we do in the early September Heat.  They claim to care about meat not being wasted, but then force us to hunt the hottest part of September?   I totally agree about just having the 8th- 21st.  ( Although I think it should run through the 30th. )  Washington has the most ridiculous game management ever.   :bash: :bash: :bash:

I don't think there is a real difference in temperature for meat care between a week in September.  Guess maybe weather records could show something, but would it be more than one or two degrees?

The average Temp moves about 15 degrees from the beginning to the end of the month, so you are correct the official average temp doesn't change drastically in one week.  However, I have hunted and lived in this area my entire life and the first week you are far more likely to get solid hot weather.  The second week it is also hot, but almost always there is a day or two where the temps dip dramatically.  When I lived on the Idaho side of the border we would just hunt those cooler days, and wait until further into the month for the bulk of our days in the field.  My point is that here you are far more likely to get a week of 80+ temps the beginning than the second week.  That second week almost always yields at least several days with cooler temperatures.

Our early season is to early, they need to set up a fixed date like we used to have. No one has mentioned that we lost five days of our late season, I would like to see that back as well.

Actually I remember a couple of years recently where the fîrst week of September was cool and maybe even wet, and the timber company lands open. Then the second week of September got hot and dry, and the timber companies closed their lands to all access.

Are you in the Northeast Corner?  I believe I was specific that I was commenting about where I hunt not the whole state.

not to start a battle but last year i was talking with a Hancock manager and he said the reason they started shutting down access due to fire danger (FOR OUR AREA aprox. 3 years ago) is due strictly to archery hunters starting fires in September. they had 5 fires total, none big, all caught by dnr crews and put out at less than 3 acres and 2 camp fires still burning but left unattended. all were archery hunter camps. These arent my words this is what i was told. dont want to jack this thread but it looks like alot of archery hunters are reading this so i hope the words gets out.

I think our late season is on a rotating start date also is why it was short this last season

I believe that is correct, used to start nov. 20 and go through Dec. 8, but the the last few seasons have been starting later and later resulting in lost days a field.
