Oregon Achery Elk Suggestions??
« on: February 24, 2014, 10:29:01 AM »
Me and a couple buddies are going to the dark side with our bows for the 30 day expierence! Oregon is a total mystery to us. We will be hunting the west side preferably the coast. We have already been biking in behind gates every week to get familiar. So far we have made it around vernonia/mist. We would apreciate any feedback on Tillamook mostly. Looking for gates that are always locked, we mountain bike in multiple miles. Not looking for any secrets by any means, but would appreciate some areas to give us a start. We will do the hard part and the homework from there on out. Just need a push start. Thanks guys!!

I'll be there as well...  I'm at the same point in my scouting too, but have a couple spots that were pointed out by some relatives from clatskanie... I don't have any info on the Tillamook area, I'll be staying a little closer to home than that this year.(my wife is due end of august, which is why I'm going oregon and not wyoming)  When I get some more intel I'll touch base with you, certainly by summer.

found out WY doesn't do it like WA where you get a point as you put in. So we are going oregon this year archery and then I will hunt muzzleloader here. "100% draw" so it says next year for WY. And as far as east goes, depends on if they shut the woods down in the west side. But I would much rather shoot a 270"+ true rosie than anything else. A true crowned dark horned bull is what I'm after.

No problem  :chuckle:

I've found crowned bulls harder to find in Oregon than Washington.  Though easier to find true rosie bulls in Oregon.

Tillamook area I'd start scouting north of the cliffs above the Wilson (starting at elk creek and headed east).  If you are biking in there are some good areas further south in the north Stott Mtn.  Lots of people hunt it, but few bike in.  Then Alsea down in the Sea Lion cave area.  Was fantastic down there before they stopped the logging due to the stupid bird lies.  Still some monsters down there though.  Most of the crowned bulls I've seen on the Oregon coast were way south between Reedsport and Scottsburg south of the river.  Been some years since I was down that far though.

Good luck!  Should be a hoot load of fun!

Make sure you have a bear tag if hunting Stott or Alsea!  Lower Alsea is crazy with big bear!  You will probably also want a shotgun in the truck.  Some of the best Mountain Quail hunting on the planet  :whoo:

He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I used to start eastside in oregon then finish the season westside. That's the beauty of a month long early season. I know a handful of areas on the westside but its been a few years since I bowhunted westside oregon give me a call if you want to bs about it. Good luck Chase.
