Jet pump help!!
« on: March 06, 2014, 03:12:42 AM »
I just picked up an 18' Gen 3 jon boat with a 70 hp prop motor. The motor is a 1988 mariner with good compression in all 3 holes. Im looking to but a pump on it for running in the Sky.
Anyone know where I can pick up a pump? Is the 70 hp engine enough engine to run a pump.
The Gen 3 empty weight is under 500 lbs?
Or should I just get an engine already set up with a pump.
The prop engine really moves this boat in the big rivers and lakes.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Your gna lose a third of your hp when you put a pump on it. You might be better off repowering completely with the appropriate motor and pump set up, but that ain't cheap. Try it on your current motor, and if its not enough, save for the future.

You only have one choice as only one outfit makes the pumps. You can buy thru 3 rivers, auburn sports ect. Should be about 2 grand. Your motor will be about a 45 horse. Jets are heavily affected by weight so your boat will not plane with too much weight in it. You will lose massive payload.
Also you will have to raise your engine up 6 inches.

With 45 horse power you payload will be about 1200 pounds total weight.

Check out there web site. http://www.outboardjets.com/boatSelection.php

It will answer all kinds of questions.

So the conversion is pretty easy. But the fact that the motor needs to be raised could lead to all kinds of stuff.

If the engine has a extra long shaft (25 inch) you would use a standard shaft at 20 inches for a jet. Jackplates dont work with pumps as it puts the intake too far back.

So ya, lots of mods to change it over.

OK Guys I think I will just start looking for a new power plant.
No sense and screwing around with it only to end up not right and under powered.
I will just keep using my drift boat for now and use the jon boat with the prop in the bigger water.
Thanks for the input.
