Some shooting with my 50cal Mountai Rifle
« on: March 12, 2014, 12:31:56 AM »
Will have to tap it over to the left a bit but man this sucker just will flat out shoot with basically zero load development!

80gr Goex 2f
.490" homecast round ball
.020" Patch lubed with Mr. Flintlocks patch lube " I left the patch a little wetter this time around"

50 yards.

5 Shots in that upper hole, The low shot was me being a dummy and squeezing the trigger when I saw a black area between my sight and the 6 O clock position of the bulls eye.

Also had my 58 Hawken out there just to fire off a shot that's been loaded in there for a few days now. Took an off hand shot and hit the 3 O clock area on the bulls eye. I love that one, she may be a little on the heavy side but its well worth it in the end.

Nice groups. A patched roundball gun can be a joy to shoot.

Nice groups.  Did a lot of research on Hawkens when I built mine back in the '70's.  Hawkens never had brass furniture.  When I see a modern "Hawken-style" rifle with a bunch of brass on it, I cringe!  :chuckle:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

man if there was a way to replace the brass on a cva hawken i'd do it in a heart beat! I hate brass with a passion. I did have the brass blacked out with brass black but with all the cleaning and handling it wears off over time.

Have you got a Dixie Gun Works catalog?  I got all the parts to build mine from them.  Most of the steel parts were "As Cast", and I had to smooth and polish them.  But that was the fun!  Lot has changed since the '70's, but they still have a lot of black powder stuff.
