I watched a guy on the hill opposite me last year shoot at a spike like nine times. He did kill it eventually, but only hit it once... And he had a rest... I generally average just over one shot for all kills, except one. I was hunting the end of the regular modfire season one year and the very last day of the season I saw a buck and tried to zero in with my scope, only to realize my reticle was blown... I went back to the same spot during late buck with a whole new setup that I really hadn't gotten comfortable with yet only having two weeks to shoot it. I jumped a decent buck and four shots later it was down, with one more mercy follow up, personal record for shots fired.
