Baiting/Attractants?
« on: March 16, 2014, 11:49:06 AM »
Just got back from a little time spent on the Bears East Adventures forum. A thread from a bear hunter in another state got me thinking. He said in his state there is a differentiation between bait & scents. They aren't allowed to use bait but apparently things like aerosol "bear bomb" or Cotten candy perfume, etc. are OK (maybe he's stretching things a little). As I understand it, the WDFW states no bear baiting or use of other attractants (course some would say using a call an attractant). No I' not trying to be a Big Spoon & stir the pot cuz I'm bored today.

It did get me think'in, it's OK to sit in my stand & eat a sardine or limburger sandwich ain't it? I do recall one time in a bar some guy dropped a scrap of Limburger on the floor & a cat came by & scraped some sawdust over it :chuckle:

Can you explain it to the judge?

"(d) As used in this subsection, "bait" means a substance placed, exposed, deposited, distributed, scattered, or otherwise used for the purpose of attracting black bears to an area where one or more persons hunt or intend to hunt them."
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

As long as you're eating it I don't see any problem with it.  Throw some bacon on it too!

 :yeah:

Be sure to dribble some down your shirt too so the bears get real close.   :chuckle:

I never did understand the reasoning behind including scents in this ridiculous anti-baiting law, as long as you are not leaving it in the woods to attract while you are not there, it should not make a difference.   :twocents:   :bash:

I heard of a guy who gets a bear every year, but he makes sure when he camps (off the beaten trail) he cooks a lot of bacon and keeps it cooking on low and sits in camp waiting for a bruin to come walking in down wind. Bait is scent and scent is bait, same thing to their nose.
