I disagree with that statement; because a good dog will learn to focus given wild bird connections and a handler that also focuses and rewards the dog for proper behavior.  Throw in some discipline when needed, and a young dog can come out of a first couple of  hunting seasons....well, to put it bluntly, seasoned!

Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

 Basic commands can be taught at home. Also an intro to birds before getting out is warranted.
My experience has been getting them out sooner than later works. Take them to all types of cover for various types of birds. Dogs, although instinctual hunters, have to learn to hunt for you and getting them out speeds up the process IMHO. Enjoy the time in the field with your young dog, just don't set too many expectations.

Yeah, you'd better have done your practice at home before the strip club or, you'll be embarrassed about the mess that happens with the first lap dance.  :chuckle:

Once you've had some experience, the strip club is a great place to build confidence with the ladies.  :chuckle:

With caution, taking a new pup out hunting can pay off in major dividends. Leaving the gun at home is good practice.Expect NOTHING from the pup but reward the hell out of it for tiny, even minute progressions. Wild birds will make a honest dog out of a pup.
The deer are exactly where you find them, and no where you dont!
