Son's 2014 Bird- Update with Pics of Wing Bone Call
« on: April 05, 2014, 07:43:40 PM »
My son got a nice bird on opening morning.  We were thinking about Machias as he was the first one to take us out and teach us the ways of turkey hunting.  Thanks Fred.

It was a great morning.  The first place that we set-up didn't work out as we hoped.  The birds flew down at sunrise but then headed the other direction.  So we went to plan B, headed to a piece of public land that we had never tried before, and broke out the decoy and started calling.  Called the bird out of a big flock in the distance. Boom.

Thanks everyone.  It was a great time with my kid.  We have tried for several years for the "youth turkey" and it finally paid off.  This year we had better weather than past years so I think that also may have helped.  The wheels are in the works for the construction of a wing bone call.  I'll post pictures of how it comes together.  It will be our first time trying to make one of these.

My son (Bow Boy) got inspired to make a wing bone call from his turkey we got last weekend.  He got it going one day while I was at work with first removing the bones and boiling them.  Then today we cut the ends off, did more boiling with the water, and glued them together.  Tomorrow he'll see if he can get some noise out of it.  It's our first time trying this.

Here some calls I made, you can take the spurs and string them on the lanyard.

What did you use to make your turkeys on the calls.

Good job Gobble Doc, and your son.
I started making wingbone yelpers years ago. I use them regularly - they work well.
I also keep the spurs and make necklaces with them. Check online for some instructions on cleaning them up and getting rid of the skin. They cleanup real nice with hydrogen peroxide, just don't get the actual spur in it or it will discolor it.
