60 hp tiller shorting out 20 amp fuse
« on: April 07, 2014, 01:02:17 PM »
2006 - 60hp Mercury tiller handle w/ electric start keeps blowing 20amp fuse when the key is turned.  What might be causing this?
Worked great, last week had a dead battery, so we pulled my buddies car battery out and swapped them for the day.  Replaced old battery with new marine battery and made sure everything was hooked back up correctly.  Go to turn the key and start.  Sounds like started goes click and then fuse pops.  Any ideas as to a fix would be appreciated.

E-tec? Friend if mine had one in 40 Hp that would start cranking when you put the tiller handle down. The wires where the tiller handle pivots had wore through.Maybe a place to check.

That'd be by first guess as well.  Short somewhere. :twocents:

I am sure it is a short of some sort.  I have chased wires back to the motor?  Without tearing into it what items may be likely culprits.  Trying to isolate the cause and look at specific possible causes.

Use a meter to isolate the short, shouldn't be very difficult.

If you want specific causes, get a meter and troubleshoot it.

If you don't have a meter, double check everything that you touched when removing/installing the battery.   If it worked fine, then you swapped the battery out and it doesn't work at all...it's most likely something you did.  re-check all of your connections and any wiring that you disturbed.

You back from Kalifornia? :chuckle:  :hello:
