For a spare, its a no brainer.

Here are some important facts to consider for tires in general but lets use your situation as an example.

The tire mentioned is rated for 780lbs. So how much does yourboat AND trailer weigh empty? Loaded like when your gona go use it? How FAR are you gona drive it?
The closer you work your tire to its rating, or beyond, the more problems you will have. I have worked many a trialer tire at 120% capacity at full air pressure for short distance of say 50 miles. a brand new cheap import tire is better than a low beat up domestic made tire running at capacity with low air...
Thats a good find and I would snatch it up in a heart beat. I'm pretty sure that beats the Harbor Freights tire/wheel como as well.

I would agree that older / weather-checked tires will definitely be a liability when towing.  I lost 3 in 2006 towing our boat from Spokane to Lake Shasta. 1 on the way down and 2 on the way back.  Luckily they were intermittent enough that I could always use the spare until the next tire shop was around.   All of them were the original tires from 1998 and were just weather-checked enough to be past their prime in 100 degree weather.

I have run some pretty sad tires and im not really afraid to do so. HEAT is a tires enemy. HEAT is generated by running at or above capacity, low air pressure, and driving long distances on HOT asphalt.

Does anyone remember the Ford Explorer rollover tire recall? Nearly ALL of the blown tires and rollovers happened in the SW where temps were high driving distances where long, and the manufacture had 27lbs stamped on the side of the tire instead of the normal 32-35 to increase ride comfort.

I had to change a tire for my father a couple of days ago. He was running a trailer at capacity for a distance... Because of the load there was more wight on one corner... It is also possible that that tire was not maxed out on air pressure... BOOM!

Have a spare tire, and grease and check those bearings ESPECIALLY if your going to drive some distance.

Thanks all, I had  new tires put on the trailer last year at Les Schwab, this year I am going to Moses Lake, I have no spare tire and do not want to leave it by the road if I get a flat. Last year I stayed near home 10 miles max. :)
