Son's Entiat success

 Well my son got his first archery deer on the first day nice 2 x 3. It was a hunt to remember for a proud father. Just got back into town from helping my Nephew in Entiat so I'll post a story and pictures as soon as I get a chance.

Okay, so here's the story. Wednesday the 19th we arrive too late in the afternoon to scout the main area we plan to hunt on Thursday and we know there is no snow to speak of in the higher elevations but we have high hopes anyway. Thursday morning we are up at 3:30 a.m. just looking at each other wondering why we are up 2 hours before we need to be. After what seemed to be a long 2 hours we head out the door. Our plan is to drive to a good vantage point and glass for deer. At first light we had spotted many does and small young bucks but nothing bigger than a two point all of which would make a good blacktail forkie look like a giant. We decide the big bucks are just not in the area yet and we head off into the crum canyon area to check that out. We stop to glass and almost immediately see deer feeding below us about 600 yards. After glassing for a few minutes we spot only a spike and 2 point sparring with each other. We sit and glass the deer for awhile thinking there must be a bigger buck around all these does. Turns out there was a small 2 point and a larger 2 point that were down to our right in the timber. The larger 2 point caught my sons attention for a few minutes, he was probably 16 inches tall and as wide. I told my son it was his call but I think we might be able to do better. He decided to pass this buck and we headed to the Baldy Mtn area. We were seeing tons of does the whole time but no big bucks. By this time the 3:30 thing was getting to my son and he dozed off for a minute or two until we rounded a corner and spotted a 150 class 3 pt with a hot doe toward the top of a ridge. After his rude awakening he decides that he wants to go after him so off he went. He finally found out what I meant by steep when he climbed the 200 yards to the top of the hill just to find the buck and the doe both gone, but I was proud that he made the effort. After this first stalk we headed towards the higher hills up to some of the steepest stuff I've seen. And wouldn't you know it my sons starts to doze again but just about the time he starts to do the funky chicken bobble head thing we spot a doe up on the hill side about 100 yards. We put the glasses on her and low and behold she has a rut crazed swollen neck boyfriend right behind her in the brush. Well the boy says " yeah I want to try for him ". He grabs his bow and off he goes, he covers the first 40 yards pretty quick then slows his pace when he's within 60 yards. From and anxious fathers perspective he was trying to get too close but what I didn't know was he couldn't see him after he got to a certain point. He looked back to me for directions and I motioned which way he needed to go, well that didn't work so I started to tell him in a quiet yell which way to go. I thought for sure it would spook the doe or the buck when I started doing that but it didn't seem to bother them a bit so I kept it up. What seemed like an hour later he was to a point he could see the buck and get a range on him 30 yards. Again as an anxious father I told him if he wanted him to go ahead and take him, he just sat there like he wasn't sure what he should do next so I said to him again take him if you want him! It was then he turned around to me and said back " I'm trying to calm myself down ". Now keep in mind this buck is only 30 yards away and does not even flinch when my son said that. It was at that point I realized this buck is so rut crazed he doesn't know what is going on around him, I knew then this was his buck and was meant to be. I watched as my son drew back his Hoyt and took careful aim ( I get a grin just typing this ) and release the arrow. I was watching through the glasses and see the buck jump and heard a solid thump of the arrow hit a log. " Oh no he missed " I said to myself as the buck runs off. I look up and my son is grinning from ear to ear and gives me the thumbs up. He yells down to me " I smoked him "!!! After alot of hugs and high fives we took up the very good blood trail though we probably started on it too soon as we bumped into him about 20 yards into trailing and my son put another arrow into him and put him down for good. This is a hunt I will remember forever , he wasn't the biggest buck on the mountain but I know for certain my son was the King of the mountain this day! I took the buck to the butcher I got the official hanging weight of 155 pounds!

My nephew caped him and we're getting a shoulder mount done, he is a cool looking buck.

Great Job to you both. I'll be up there this weekend for the 2nd hunt. That cape is awesome. I've mounted over 200 muledeer and never have seen a throat patch quite like that. Congrats!

Thats Awsome!  Tell your son congrats!  Any buck with a bow is deffinatly a trophy.

I got to say that the cape on that deer is awsome as well.  I have never seen a double throat patch like that on a deer.  I've been doing taxidermy for 7 years.

Bladetech - I'll let Mike know you said that! Man those Bladetechs are the sh*t, I skinned my sons buck and butchered my wifes deer and mine is still razor sharp.

Thanks to all for the comments my son is loving them and so am I, for all those fathers waiting for their children to reach hunting age, just let me tell you it's worth the wait. I would much rather see my son or daughter out in the feild with me than ever harvest something myself. To share your passion with your kids and your significant other (yes I hunt with my wife also) is something to enjoy for a lifetime!
