Lake Quinault opening
« on: April 25, 2014, 04:18:41 PM »
I was told today that the lake will actually be opening Saturday. Supposedly there is going to be some odd rules you will have to go by before you can drop a boat in the lake. Not 100% positive what those are yet but one of ladies at the Merc told me that your boat will have inspected by a certain person here in Amanda Park before you can take it on the lake. Sounds odd but wouldn't surprise me. At least I can finally go slay some trout and dollies I guess.

I heard (rumor mill) it was opening to non-tribal use, but the catch was the person had to have property on the lake.  So all the people that had docks on the lake could actually use their boats or go swimming.  Again, it was like third hand rumor.   :dunno:

I saw a report on the news the other day that said it was opening to the public with new rule to protect from pollution.

I've heard that as well.
I was told the liscenses, permits and the rules might be available this evening at the Merc so that their ready for the morning rush. Im going to head down there in a few minutes and see.

I've heard their main push this year is going to be about keeping pollution and invasive plants out of the lake. There isnt and never has been a problem with either IMO. Only thing that might be harmful would be the carp that are in there and they didnt end up here because someone didnt wash their boat before leaving another lake.

Looks like only "locals" can use thier boats in the lake. I had to sign an affidavit that said my boat can only be used on the Quinault river system otherwise it gets labeled as transient and they dont allow them at this time. My boat will have to be inspected in a few weeks when they are all set up to do so. Until then, I can still fish though.

Well I come to find out today that my boat is not allowed on the lake. Apparently my 17' Valco sled with a 50hp Evinrude jet is too dangerous for fish smolts and eggs and whatnot so if I want to use it, I have to use a prop driven motor. I know it does kinda say it in the paper that jet powered boats are not allowed but I assumed that was their way of describing personal watercraft vessels like jet skis and seadoos, which have always been prohibited from the lake. Seems kinda hypocritical when you realize how many jet sleds are on the lower Quinault every day of the week. Apparently there is no smolt or eggs downstream of the lake to get sucked up.  :bash:
