89 ford ranger mt rig project???

Looking to lift my 89 ranger to get around on the mt roads where the full size pickups won't go. Any idea on how high I should go and if I should go with a spring or block lift? How big of a project is this to do on your own? Have a family farm so have pretty much any tool a guy would need. Don't know that I would a whole bunch of lift just having the shorter wheel base of the ranger will help lots. Any input is a great help haven't played with lifts at all really.

it really depends on how serious of stuff you want to go over and how big of tire you want to run.  most drive-able roads you can get away with a 31 to 33 inch tire and can do a simple body lift to fit a tire of that size but if you want to get much bigger you will have to buy a lift kit and depending on what you buy they can get expensive for ifs, also can get into a bit more of a chore.  i have a 93 toyota i cut out the front suspension and put a straight axle in it out of an older toyota then lifted it 9 inches and can clear 40 inch tires put lockers in the front and rear and i can go anywhere i want without thinking about in.

I personally wouldnt lift it to much, couple inches of body lift, trim a bit to fit 31-33" tires, and install a locker in the rear. that thing will go places you wouldnt dream. you could even use some of the saved money from a lift to go towards a winch, then your really in the money.
