help please
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:25:33 PM »
so this year is my first time ever turkey hunting my son passed hunter safety a couple weeks ago and badly wanted to hunt so we figure turkey is a good tooth cutter so we go to a place in the blues we have seen turkeys first morning we go out and our first set up i make a few calls on the slate and get several gobbles back from different locations around us about every 30 seconds i would make a cluck or purr and get instant gobble responses from all birds and they were all getting closer every call you could tell the birds were all coming together and getting closer we watched the birds come over a ridge about 200 yards away there were 6 of them and they had all grouped together and were coming in on a string with no hesitation we were on top of a ridge and watched them come down there side and into the bottom of the canyon we lost sight of them coming up the hill because we had a dead log 20 yards below us that blocked our line of sight of them coming up the hill the whole time they constantly gobbled as the first bird jumped in the air to land on the log my boy shoots he saw a beard and got trigger happy and missed cant blame him because it was a serious adrenaline rush but he missed and it was almost dark so our hunt was over the following weekend we went up and hunted saturday and sunday saw birds run across the road headed to camp and saw birds at a distance put on a lot of miles and did lots of calling and never heard a gobble the entire weekend never heard anyone shoot and never saw anybody else hunting but why will the birds not respond at all am i missing something since i am new i am open to any help thank you in advance

Sorry to hear your boy missed.  It definitely gets the adrenaline going.

I don't know why you are not getting any responses other than the toms may be henned up.  Also, you did educate a few birds that all that yelps is not feathered.  I would try to get out in the evening or before light and try to locate some birds on their roost.  Then, get close enough so you can see how they respond to your calling and work from there.

Stalking quiet or henned up turkeys is challenging and can be quite effective, just make sure it is a turkey and not another hunter's decoys.  A couple of years ago, I snuck in on some hens yelping, when I spotted the "birds", I could tell they were decoys and just moved off.  Those guys were probably bummed that the hen they were talking to moved off.   :chuckle:

Some days they just don't gobble. They come in quite, they are there just no talking.

Sounds like they're henned up and don't want anything to do with others
