fishing lure

well it's raining cats and dogs down here on the coast so I thought I would throw out a rainy day conversation. If you could only have one lure or fish catching item in your tackle box what would it be? Fly, jig, lure, bait ? I would have to go with a 1/4 oz jig head with a three inch pumpkin seed twister tail. I have caught so many bass, crappie, walleye, trout, pike on this rig. A very close second would be a kastmaster in silver. What is your goto lure or set up.

Tough choice! I would take a Rapala Shad Rap. Whether trolled or casting it will catch most anything that swims in freshwater. My saltwater choice would be a cut plug herring, it too will catch just about anything that swims in saltwater.

#5 Blue Fox Super Vibrax in chartreuse.  I have caught everything from bass, crappie, trout, walleye, steelhead, salmon, rock fish, pike, you name it with that one lure.  My second would be a plastic worm that I designed 30+ years ago. (the worms on the right) in the color on the left are super deadly on smallmouth and largemouth.

That is a tough question. Tough to pick just one. Does bait count?
Answer is a bit easier if you make it situational:
Northwest saltwater I'd pick herring no question.
Rivers- sand shrimp or eggs. Lakes, probably a night crawler.

If I had to pick one lure for any and all situations, fresh, salt, lakes, rivers that would be really difficult...maybe some kind of spoon...1/4-3/8 ounce ...probably silver. But it would be a huge compromise. Sounds like an interesting experiment if someone wanted to try using only 1 lure for a whole year, say. I would never have the patience for it personally.

Since you added bait as part of your question.  I would pick bait.

Eggs, Sand Shrimp, tuna fish in the can packed in oil for river fishing Salmon and Steelhead.

bait fish for saltwater

worms, powerbait, eggs, etc for all others.

Black wooly bugger, 1/0 hook, weighted on the heavy side. Can be fished well in rivers and lakes and will catch anything trout, salmon, steelhead, bass, and tiger musky.
