How much penetration do you need to make a kill shot?

I'd recommend as heavy a setup as you are comfortable shooting. I shoot my arrows at a total weight of 550gr, with a 150gr BH. You won't notice as much drop as you might think. The arrow will have more momentum, which means it will retain downrange speed and energy.

Also, if you design your arrows with 12% to 18% FOC, you will notice much better flight and greater penetration too. Just make sure you use a quality BH with extremely sharp blades and your final setup will do it's job if you do yours

Which Z7 do you have?
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

If shooting the original Z7 you will see about 2% additional energy at five yards adding the 50 grains.  Or about half (50%) the energy of a .22 Long Rifle at the same distance. ;)  So instead of your arrow going 10 yards after penetrating the deer it now goes about 10 yards 7 inches past the deer :chuckle:

I agree with et1702 that over 12% FOC you will notice much better flight.  And make sure those broadheads are extremely sharp!  Those two things are WAY more important than energy!

from a guy that used to shoot 90lbs and 750 grain arrows Id suggest not going heavier as long as your foc is good . With the weight forward design and 100 grain bh's you should be fine . If you add fifty more grains with that poundage my bet is she falls off the table down range . you can run a chronograph test with different weights and see where the magic spot is for Ke . but my guess is your pretty close .  :twocents:

I wouldn't go much heavier at 60 lb draw weight. Shoot your Reds and a shaving sharp Broadhead and you'll do fine. Is crank those limbs down to 70 lbs if you go with a 50 grain addition.
