Draw Question
« on: May 15, 2014, 09:49:26 AM »
Can I select the same hunt both times(for both choices) for my quality application? You get two choices, can they both be the same hunt?

Same question for buck deer. Can I apply for the same hunt for all choices?

I don't know if you can but it wouldn't matter for draw odds.

I am pretty sure you can't but you can try and it will let you know if it works. I am not sure why you would though because if you name/number is drawn and choice 1's tags are gone that means choice 2 would be gone as well.

As the other guys said, it wouldn't help your odds in any way. Just put in for one hunt. You don't need to pick two.

Worthless exercise. When you name is drawn, they look at your first hunt choice first. If a permit is available, it is awarded. If a permit is not available, your second choice is evaluated next. If a permit was not available for a particular hunt as your first choice, it will never be available as your second choice for the same hunt.

Wouldn't matter, cause if you didn't draw with it as your first choice cause it's already full, as a second choice it would still be full.

Thanks for the help. Arizona, where I'm from, takes your first two choices.

One more question. If I put in for buck deer and draw a hunt, can I hunt it and the general modern as long as I don't shoot a deer on the buck deer hunt?

 :yeah:

CouesFanatic, here is how the draw works.  First, the agency takes all of the names (those who bought an application for that hunt, for example "Quality Deer"), and puts those names into a hat.  Second, for each applicant, the computer generates randomly drawn numbers--you get two numbers if you have 2 points, eighteen numbers if you have 18 points.  Third, the computer throws out all but the lowest number generated for each applicant.  Fourth, the computer then selects the lowest number for all applicants, and looks at his first hunt choice.  If that hunt choice is available, he gets the tag, and the computer moves on to the next lowest number; but if that hunt choice is not available, the computer moves to the applicant's 2nd hunt choice.

Do you see why your idea is meaningless?  If your number is drawn (because you have the lowest number of all applicants), then you will get your 1st hunt choice, if it is available.  But if that tag has already been filled, and the computer moves on to the 2nd choice, you will still not get that tag.  Therefore, if you really only want one special hunt/area/tag, then only choose that hunt on your application.

Good example, except your wrong on the amount of names in the hat.  Your number is expenential, so if you have 2 points you have 4 names in the hat.  18 points you have 324 names in the hat, just times the number of points you have by itself.

Yes that makes sense. Here is how it is in AZ:

You are assigned a random number for your first and second choices based on how many bonus points you have. If I apply for the same hunt number with 5 bonus points then I will have 12 chances to draw that tag. If I apply for two different hunts then I will have 6 chances at the first one and six chances at the second one. Both first and second choice are thrown in the first round.

Washington is different, I will select two hunts.

A side note, having separate groups of bonus points for quality, special, buck deer, second deer and all this crap is outrageous. If it were only 1 section for deer than people would move through the point system faster because they can only chose two or so hunts. It seems like it is a way for the F&G to make more money by charging for each section. If you have 4 sections of bonus points for each species in washington then you can have like 32 different sections of bonus points. what a nightmare.

In Arizona you have a bonus point for each species, not section within a species.

Anyone know this:

If I put in for buck deer and draw a hunt, can I hunt it and the general modern as long as I don't shoot a deer on the buck deer hunt?

Yes, when you draw a special permit, you are still allowed to use your tag in any of the general season hunts.

You can hunt it in the general modern and buck deer special draw hunt.  You only have one tag though for deer (excluding the thought for second antlerless draw tag).  You can fill that tag during general or draw hunt.
