Scouting the Wenaha
« on: May 26, 2014, 11:29:03 AM »
Fun weekend. Missed first light Sunday down in a box canyon, finally got a chance to glass this morning and spotted some critters but battled the fog endlessly!

20.3 mile loop in two days. Gorgeous country, can't wait to draw a tag!

Edit: Scott did the calculations today and my 16 mile estimate was short...looks like it was 20.3 for us!!!

Great job, lots of fun.

Unsolicited advice, but next time challenge yourself to cut the pack weight in half. You would cover more ground with less effort, which should be the objective of early season scouting.

I run a pretty lightweight setup...

Only extra was moonshine.

What's your pack weight at?

I've got my pack list for nine days on another thread...I didn't calc my pack before I went.

I think if you search pack list it will come up.

But I believe I'm at 47 or so pounds for 7 days, that includes everything except the clothes I'm wearing and my trekking poles.

Nice. Couldn't think of a better place to spend a weekend.

Absolutely.  (It was unsolicited advice, as I said.  Take no offense, please.)

I climb during the summertime (no more winter ascents for me).  I learned a great lesson this past year climbing the granite walls in the Enchantments.  I usually carry in a 45-lbs. pack (including harness, 60m @ 9.5mm rope, some tools, and a 1/2 rack).  Of one the climbing partners (my first time with him) came with a 25-lbs. pack.  I kid you not.  It was almost like a day pack in comparison.  But he had the last laugh---he had everything that he needed, but came in at about 1/2 the weight.  I was absolutely stunned.  It can be done.

I have always been the guy willing to bring the 70 liter pack, with the extra gear.  I realize now this is not absolutely necessary.

Too soon olt, too late schmart.

Silk, looks like an awesome trip. Did you guys stick to a route/trail, or did you just dive off into the abyss?

Fair-

We picked a trail. Easiest way to get a feel for new country.

Jack-

Just a scouting trip this time, but I've got 5 points for spring bear...

Scott always manages to get a few sweet photos. This is my favorite one of me when we are nearing our last major ascent.
