Anyone else fish Deep Lake out by Cumberland for trout and have any luck lately? I went two days out of the weekend, got skunked both days to my surprise. Fish were jumpin all over the place, and we used everything we had; worms, power bait, power bait eggs, all sorts of spinners and lures and didn't get a single hit. I haven't fished this lake more than a handful of times and haven't caught anything on it yet, sadly I'm limited to shore fishing with no boat, but saw people leaving the shore with stringers or coolers full so I figure there's gotta be something I'm doing or not doing.

What types of lures are you using?

1/12 oz. Aglia in about half a dozen different colors, rooster tails, wedding rings and minnow lures are a few of what I tried, never had much luck with powerbait of any kind, usually worms will land me something pretty quick, but didn't get even a single hit over the course of about 7 hours.

Could have been a big hatch going on. When there is a sudden abundance of one particular food source they focus on it ignoring everything that is not the food they are feeding on. This is why fly fishermen have so many fly's. The where jumping most likely chasing rising aquatic insects that are "hatching" to adult stage.

I have fished that lake a 10 or 12 times in the last 14 years and have never done very good. There are lots of better lakes closer to the city. I think it may be that everyone thinking the fishing is better a little farther out. But it may just be me. Now that i mostly fish from a boat these days i may just take the canoe out and give it another try.

I hadn't thought of that jasnt, that's a good point. Sadly I don't do much lake fishing usually, drift fishing a river is more my thing. Been looking for a decent lake close-ish to home that isn't totally overrun by screaming children and oblivious huge families, the closer to the city you get the more of that comes with it sadly.

did you try trolling a worm with no weight no swivel no nothing at very first light? about 50 ft or so behind the boat?

is it open for fishing at night? sometimes thats the best time to catch fish with lock jaw

I fished deep lake like 6 times last year and only caught 1 tiny guy and only saw maybe 3 caught. Try ravensdale lake, it's close to you and has bass and bream

If you are able to borrow a boat definitely try what jackmaster suggested. could also try a tru turn hook with a worm and a swivel and about four feet of leader no weight also about 50ft behind the boat. I also have good luck with wedding rings and worm doing the same thing at my local lakes. trolling on 1 with my minnkota.

I'll check out Ravensdale lake for sure, thanks! I'm going to buy a little boat here sometime this year hopefully, my canoe got stolen right out of my yard a while ago, haven't been able to replace it yet. A wedding ring and worm has worked well for me while trolling in the past too

The lake is inside Nolte state park so it's closed to night fishing. 4,000 fish were planted in April this year.

Try Kastmasters or Phoebes. Both produce trout for me consistently. 1/8 ounce. gold and silver. Look into getting a float tube. Way cheaper, and you can troll as if you were in a boat. I love mine. got it brand new for $50

One more thing that is a very simple tool but very few people i talk to know about is a worm threader. I personally use the second style.

I'll have to look into that worm threader, never used one before. A float would be a great idea too, especially for fly fishing

Should be about time for the damsel hatch since everything is a bit early this year. If that is the case, good luck getting them to hit anything but nymphs and flies. I've driven myself nuts trying to get fish to bite within a few days before and after a big hatch without the right stuff. One year the damsel hatch was so large I couldn't even get a largemouth to hit.
