just looking for a little advice
« on: June 01, 2014, 08:04:27 PM »
This is my first year really getting in to going and setting up my can so I was just curious what's a good amount to leave my camera out before I check it? I was going to give it about 2 weeks? This is a spot that I have never tried before I stumbled upon it last year and since then I've wanted to set it up and see what I get. So just some feedback and camera advice would be nice! Any advice you guys have that has anything to do with setting up cameras please and thanks you!

With a new camera and/or a new location, I often will give it only a couple days, or one week at the most. I like to be sure the camera is working properly and that I have it aimed in the best way possible.

You need to have some method of viewing your pictures, you don't want to wait until you get home. So I usually bring either my laptop or an iPad. You may find that the sun isn't right for part of the day. Or that the wind comes up every afternoon, blowing grass, brush, or tree limbs, and causing your camera to take hundreds of pictures of nothing. Or it could just be that most of the animals that come by aren't centered in the pictures.

Lots of things can go wrong so the first time you check it, you may end up moving it, adjusting some of the settings, clearing obstructions out of the way, etc. that's why I don't wait long the first time. But once I become more comfortable with the setup, I will give them a minimum of two weeks. Three weeks is better, and sometimes I'll go four, but I usually don't have the patience for that.

I agree with the above...its a real bummer to set a cam for the first time and leave it for a month to only come back to it and it has taken 0 pics, a branch has triggered it 2,000 times, sun has washed out half of them and etc. I gain trust in cams and those ones go up to places I can trust them to sit for a month or more to work right.  The other benefit to checking every 2 weeks is bears love to play with them, example today I went and checked 3 and bears had turned all 3 around the tree.

Another thing to consider is are you putting bait in front of cam? or a trail? this will decide how to set your delay and to make sure you have a large enough SD card to hold all the pics while your gone, nothing worse having a SD fill weeks before u check it

I do have some stuff in front of my can, apple late and a salt lick. I have it set on motion detect still. Should it be on something different with bait out in front of it??

On delay I mean is it on burst where it takes 2-3 pics a trigger and is it on 1 min delay, 30 sec and so on all cams have different delay settings. I set my delays on bait at 1 min and usually just 1 pic. If not your SD cards will fill fast! I have a cam out now that is set at 1 pic and 1 min delay and there was 4,770 pics in 14 days
