Wood Duck decoys
« on: July 29, 2014, 12:20:54 PM »
Hey everyone,

I am fairly new to waterfowling in Washington as I moved her awhile back from Nebraska. I have plenty of mallard decoys, 6 pack of pintails, widgeon, and geese. I was wondering if throwing wood ducks in the spread on the eastern side of Washington would help mix things us in the spread as well. Does anyone else do this and is mixing quite a few species up here in Washington on the east side a good idea? Thanks for any feedback.

In the early season I have woodies 8) I just put them apart from the other decoys because apparently wood ducks are territorial.

Wood ducks are far and few between here in washington.
Sure, some guys will argue they see them all the time.... but the majority of hunters are lucky to ever see one while in the field.
It doesn't hurt to throw them in, but I don't think they are necessary.
There's a good chance though that if you use 'em, it'll attract green wing teal.

I live in Spokane myself and have been hunting for the last four season and I haven't seen a wood duck yet during hunting season. Now I am sure there are plenty of guys who know a secret spot they can hammer them but I haven't found them so I wouldn't bother getting wood duck decoys.

We killed a five man limit of woodies over 6 teal decoys last year's opener in wa state. Were they needed, nope. We also kill more throughout the season and have never put out a decoy for them.  That being said, I'm going to pick up a half dozen carved woodies because I have a decoy problem, not because I need them to kill wood ducks.

GOBS of woodies in the Tri-Cities area, I know of one particular spot where the usual flock is 20 - 40 birds, got a 2 shot triple of drakes out of that bunch last year.
