lopez island deer!
« on: July 08, 2014, 05:10:24 PM »
Well as I've mentioned before, my dad lives on Lopez island as well as my grandparents. I go up there about 2 tines a year and my favorite part is driving around checking out all the deer, and of course just the peace and quite of the island. Its perfect up there! Anyway I saw one nice blacktail buck (I don't hunt blacktail, I haven't yet anyway) but anyway he crossed the road in front of us, from the looks of it he was just past his ears and a nice 3 point. But he wasn't in the mood to let me take a picture haha. But I did get a few other pictures of some other bucks. Oh and probably the best fire work show I've ever seen. I go up there every year for the 4th and I recommend everyone trying to make it up there one of these years for the show!  does anyone on this site live up there? Hunt there? Have pictures of deer from there. I would love to see them! Thanks for reading.

Lokidog and I live just a hop away on Decatur island, and our little school is part of the Lopez Island School District (our daughter just graduated from high school there).  So, yes, we spend a fair amount of time on Lopez (we keep a car at Hunter Bay).

Nice!  I go up every August.  Usually for a long weekend fishing/crabbing/camping trip, but this year I'll be there for much of the month!  I've spent a lot of time driving around looking at deer, particularly when I'm trying to get a toddler to fall asleep.  I plan to do some scouting this year to find places to hunt in case I want to get one of the second deer tags some year.

My ex-wife and I used to spend a LOT of time on Lopez. Her grandparents had a cabin near Alec Bay. It's a wonderful island with friendly people. I agree that they have a great fireworks show. I've never hunted there, but the place is crawling with deer.

Here are a few more pic's of friends that I hunting. I keep track of all my buddy's deer that have been harvested over the last 18 years.  77 deer I can count in the photo album. The pic with the 5 deer was a one day hunt with shotguns and the other pic with 4 deer is a 2 day hunt with muzzleloaders. Most of the time if I take a first timer it is hard because we push and jump the deer. So the shots are fast and close, but now my one buddy is getting older and can't pound the brush any more so I might post him up as I push or we sit in a blind. It is not as good as it was back in the 90's. We use to jump 15+ deer a day and pass on them but now if we push hard we see 8 or so and some times more. But the brush is thick and me hear more that we see. LOL  When I hunted modern I used pistol's and 12g shotguns with 00 buck or 1 buck shot and took head shots close and body shots passed 20 yards but most shots are close and all you could see is a head. Now a days I hunt Muzzleloader so I shoot my Knight and a CVA sxs 12g with 00-buck for those close shots. Last year I bagged my 2ND deer at 10ft bedded down. Well I hope you like the pictures.

Nice deer Bear Hunter!

We met on the ferry back in 99' I was coming back from Orcas.  We got 4 bucks and 1 doe that day; mine was a nice three point, and I think you got 3 or 4 deer as well.  If my memory serves me right it was the last day of the late hunt.

I had a great spot to hunt near Deer Harbor on Orcas and then it got developed by deer lovers and that was the end of that.  I then was able to secure a large tract to hunt on San Juan Island but that has since been transferred to the San Juan Land Preservation Trust.  They don't allow hunting and the rumor is that tract will become part of the English Camp National Park.  Last time I hunted in the San Juan’s was in 2008 and I miss it.  There is no deer hunting around like hunting in the San Juan’s.

Here are a few pics of the bigger bucks I have got in the Islands.

 I remember. Yeah it is getting harder to find land to hunt. But we still have a some spots of land hunt.  It is harder to find the deer and the bucks are harder to come by. But that's ok I only hunt the lands for my 2nd deer tag and I leave the bucks for my buddy's that hunt modern season. Hey it good to talk to you again. Are you ever going to hunt the islands again? Let me now if you what to hunt Lopez or if you have a boat. You should go to Cypress island Great place to hunt but it is boat access only. My first hunt there I bagged a nice 3x3 Muzzleloader hunt. All I do is muzzle for deer now. Talk to you late and great looking big bucks for a island deer.

About the land on San Juan and other life time leases. The Fish and Game said that the DNR lands at got least are to be still opened to hunting under the contract.. But I don't know foursher. If it is true the hunter need to stand as one to fight them back and stop them from kicking us off state lands.

Good job ...I am glad someone keeps the population in check ...  :chuckle: There are some nice bucks out there but you have to weed threw a lot of deer to find one ...I have seen a couple dandy bucks taken off the Islands ..The biggest ones will come off of Guemes Island ..Those big bucks that live on Fidalgo swim the channel back and forth ..
