Cool map tool!
« on: July 09, 2014, 09:02:42 PM »
So I was tired of paying $60+ for a custom map and took my frustration to the interwebs.  I came across this:  http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/

It's like google earth, which is a great scouting tool, except you can't print and customize a lot of things.  First off, you can print usgs 7.5' or larger quads (but that's not hard to do elsewhere).  The cool thing is that you can select layers (hydrology and land cover, etc) and also upload kml files!  You can upload kml files in google maps, but you can't print.  I thought this would be a great compliment to your scouting arsenal....if someone else hasn't already mentioned it on this site already.

Yeah, that is a good one, check out caltopo.com.  It is pretty nice as well.

Is there a way to make the overlays different sizes?  Example: Can you make all the roads bold?  This map is freaking sweet if I can get those roads figured out.

Thanks for the tip!

There's 2 ways that I know of doing that....If you click on the selection tab, you can highlight roads by clicking on them.  I don't think you can make them more bold than what it already is, but you can adjust the transparency.  Or you can do it the hard way and draw lines by clicking on the annotation tab and selecting which method to draw.

A map for $60?  Di somebody see you coming?  Should be a little more than 1/10 of that.

It's a custom map that's waterproof, has gmu boundaries, shaded relief, etc. It basically tells you where all the elk are and when they're most vulnerable.  :)

Thanks for the link! But as always, I still have yet to find a mapping tool that overlays hunting areas (such as LT Murray).

Try switchbacks.com.  They have gmu kml files for the entire state.  I'm not sure about the hunt areas but i'd give them a check.
