US Fish and Wildlife Service agrees to review red wolf program in northeastern North Carolina
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS June 28, 2014
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has agreed to review the red wolf program, raising the possibility that the 27-year experiment to restore the rare predators in eastern North Carolina may come to an end.
The Charlotte Observer reports (
http://bit.ly/1pASvPH
) the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission asked the federal agency this month to "determine the appropriateness of continuing the experimental (wolf) program."
The 90 to 110 endangered wolves roaming near Albemarle Sound have been under fire for several years. A growing number of gunshot deaths threaten the group's ability to reproduce.
Fish and Wildlife ended a seven-year effort to establish red wolves in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1998. The state commission said too many pups died and adults weren't able to stay within the 521,000-acre park.

It appears the habitat is not compatible. Many non compatible habitats are showing up in Washington state also.

"The 90 to 110 endangered wolves roaming near Albemarle Sound have been under fire for several years."
I wonder who's doing their wolf counting? Sounds like WDFW and the Lookout pack, after seven years there are only five wolves, or maybe one and a half wolves left, depending on which number is pulled out of the sky and which year.
Sounds like those folks have public wolf management down, or the USFWS can't raise wolves fast enough, time for a wolf switch.

I was reading an article by a local landowner on this subject today. It appears to be quite a mess. I admit I am not optimistic that some similar management mistakes are not/will not be made with the Grey Wolf re-intro in the west. Wile the species are very different, apparently, the damage caused by poorly conceived objectives and management could be equal or greater.

Also, under the comments below this article I found this helpful comment with a link to support the landowners "observations":
"Mr. Helling, this is not Mr. Jett's opinion. This information is from the USFWS own reports and research. Go to
http://www.nchuntandfish.com
. Go to the General forum and find the Red Wolf Restoration Scandal thread. There are 87 pages including research papers, reviews, e-mails between USFWS government employees and Red Wolf Coalition members, research papers on the lack of DNA specific only to red wolves, letters between Mr. Jett and the USFWS etc. etc. THis is evidence , not opinion and it is damning."
