Pasayten
« on: July 24, 2014, 01:51:53 PM »
Any good suggestions for a 3-day backpacking route in the Pasayten?  I'm not planning on doing any serious scouting.  I just want to get some hiking and fishing in.  I've looked at a few routes which all seam to be about 4-7 day trips and doesn't work into my plan of relaxing for 3 days.  I'm thinking something around 20-25 mi.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  The only potential trip I've looked at so far for 3-days would be a Buckskin-Freds/Doris, Ferguson loop.  I'm saving the Hiddens for a 4-day trip later.  Not really wanting to go to Crystal/Kidney with all the blowdown.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I think its a great choice for "Buckskin-Freds/Doris, Ferguson loop". That will give opportunity for some lake and Robinson creek / Pasayten river fishing. There are good campsites on all of the Robinson/Buckskin trails. There is a very nice one halfway out from Holman if you venture west NW to Rock creek.  It's actually on the west fork of Pasayten. If you don't have a book/map of sites, I could probably give you GPS for that spot. If you come back out Buckskin, you've got Silver lake too.

How bad is the drive to Slate Pass?  I'm thinking about driving up from Chelan the night before and car camping at the trailhead.  I'm just not sure how the road is in the dark.

its not bad mark. everyone talks that road up for some reason, but theres plenty out there that are worse. it is long though. budget an hour from mazama to slate peak.

So I don't have to worry about driving off a cliff in the dark?

Oh the sarcasm I could spout out!!!   :chuckle:

The only real place to slow down and watch what you're doing is through Dead Horse turn. Yes, good headlights are a must there. Hug the wall. watch for rocks. Pray. Go slow.. Watch for rocks. Pray...

If you're taking the Buckskin ridge trail to start, don't go all the way up to Slate peak. You want the second trailhead (Robinson creek trailhead Y's to Buckskin part way down the ridge at the upper end of the valley), after you pass Harts pass campground. The trailhead up at Slate will take you down to Rock creek/Holman and this time of year there's likely a good snowfield to cross just after you drop over the edge.

Remmel Lake, Upper Cathedral Lake, Lower Cathedral Lake to name a few.  Beautiful place to camp anyway in the Pasayten I'd imagine!

I was looking at that option Mountainman and Steen.  It looked like it might be hard to squeeze in to 3 days.  What trailhead do you guys use?  Looking at the maps, there appears to be several access points.
