New at bear calling
« on: August 10, 2014, 03:08:10 PM »
I live in the east side of the state,Sept is coming and I'm wanting to call in a bear this year. Just ordered a new Wayne Carlton call. Anybody got any pointers or tips? Anybody use his calls before?

It is Carlton's newer open reed bear call?
I am sure the newer one will work fine but I like the old green one which they haven't made in years.

You will want to learn how to control volume and learn to convey emotion through sound. Practice in your rig to and from work.

I always suggest starting with closed reeds. If wanting a custom bear call I would suggest RR. If just wanting off the shelf I would suggest Burnham Bros C3 Long Range.

How long are your sequences, and frequency within an hour time frame? BTW I am getting the howler down, hope to go try it out this weekend.

A few minutes then take a breath. You have to keep calling as much as you can. Bears, bobcats cougar lose interest easy. Rick

Yea an hour is plenty.  Put a watch out in front of you because trust me an hour to crank, non-stop, on a call is a long time.  20 minutes into it you’ll think you have done an hour.  How far to move depends on a lot of factors, how high is the wind blowing?  Much over 15 mph and I don’t call at all.  If it is raining slightly that will dampen the call, the terrain features can limit how far out your call is reaching.  You’ll want to move far enough that you are getting into a new area that your previous calling site was not reaching, but not so far as to be missing bears.
