Most cams have a 30 ft range. Buy one with extended battery life like a Moultrie I40 or I60. It has a laser beam for sighting. If you do a search on trail cams on her you will come up with a mess of info.

mine has a 30 ft range, extended battery life, and a laser, just wondering about how high up the tree, and is 30 ft from the target stretching it, or should it be closer?

There is no perfect answer for your question. It all depends on what you are setting up for.  For predators, I like them within 4 to 6 feet. Deer and elk 8 to 12 feet. Take along a digital camera. Hold it against the tree and take a picture. Look at the picture and determine how to move the camera to get the picture you want. Laser and walk lights are worthless in my opinion Sometimes you need to put a stick behind the camera to cant it downward to get the best picture. I rarely mount my cameras on a tree, They are usually 16 to 24 inches from the ground. I mount my cameras on stakes that I pound into the ground, and then tie brush and weeds around the camera and stake.

I like to set my cameras with the laser at hip level. Seems to catch most everything. Make sure you clear any brush that might set it off in wind.
