PathfinderJR tumbles first coyote
« on: August 17, 2014, 02:06:19 PM »
Not a lot of dramatic story here, but pretty cool nonetheless.
We weren't really coyote hunting yesterday, just doing some deer scouting near our area.  Saw a 'yote chewing on a ribcage that looked at us belligerently when we stopped the truck.  We weren't really expecting anything, so JR had to get the 7mm out from behind the seat, uncase it, find ammo etc...  During this time the 'yote started getting nervous and trotted off.  By the time Junior had a rest (on a fence post) the dog was about 100 yards and still trotting right to left.  That's a chip-shot for the boy (he's been shooting 3 position smallbore all summer) and he piled him up nicely with a single shot just in front of the shoulder.  He was a decent sized male dog to be acting so naive. Gift from God, I guess.. :dunno:

Well it's a fact, the proof is in the first pic. The 7mm is not fur friendly on small game  :chuckle: Nice shot Jr  ;)

Yeah, those 168gr Berger VLDs just about took his head off.  Jr hit him in at the base of the neck where it meets the shoulder.  Looked like he was shot with a volleyball... :chuckle:

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Thanks Jim.  I am loading up the rifle team and taking them to the Milton Freewater Range today.  We're going to have an outdoor team practice then most of them are bringing their deer rifles to sight in.  Should be a good day.

I took them out there the other night after that storm.  Steady 5-10 mph wind.  That was a new experience for most of them.
