Elk Hunting with dogs??
« on: September 16, 2014, 11:40:39 AM »
Well every year two or three dogs are brought to our elk camp.

I was wondering what everyone thought about that issue?

Most the dogs are small 20 lbs or less. Sleep in their owners tents and hang out. I don't really care but who thinks the scent might effect getting close to elk.

Probably no more effect than the smell of bacon, eggs, campfire smoke, and sweat on your clothes.

don't know about the scent issue but we had a camp not far from ours that brought dogs. they never shut up and it was aggravating as he!! I have been told in the past that elk wont go anywhere around where dogs are ?

I've always had my labs with me at elk camp.  They are expected each year.  Well mannered and kind of considered camp mascots.  Heck, the breakfast cook even makes sure they each get a pancake and egg for breakfast like the rest of us.  I don't think it affects the ability to get elk at all.  We've consistently brought down 3-4 bulls each year with 6-8 hunters in the woods.  I killed my bull last season at about 10 yards distance.  Don't think the dog scent on my clothing was an issue.
