« on: September 17, 2014, 10:51:03 PM »
Hi guys... Just trying to get some clarification. Due to an encounter with a sow and a cub I had a few days ago while hunting lewis( mama bear was not to happy with me), I want to start carrying my pistol with me while archery hunting. Am I able to do so on The Fort during archery if I register weapon at Lewis NAC? Thanks

According to the 2014 hunting regulations:
Archery Regulations
1  Rules pertaining to all archery hunting seasons:
a  It is unlawful for any person to carry or have in his possession any firearm while in the field archery hunting, during an archery season specified for that area, except for modern handguns carried for personal protection  Modern handguns cannot be used to hunt big game or dispatch wounded big game during an archery, big game hunting season.

So according to the regs you are allowed to carry for protection.
I don't know about the base. Hopefully, someone here may have specifics on that.
Several years ago I was scouting an area I planned on hunting and during the scout I found out a hunter had hit a bear with an arrow but wasn't able to recover the animal. I figured the bear was still alive and very angry about having a stick lodged in it. You better believe I was packing the next morning walking through the dark forest to get to my stand.
Good luck.

Not allowed to carry a sidearm while hunting, regardless of hunting method according to #13 under the hunting rules

It says on the second post, unless used for protection?!  I carry mine when ever I hunt, either with bow muzzy or rifle.  They can give me a ticket if they want but that's not how I read the rule.  :dunno:

:yeah: it doesn't matter when or where if I'm in the woods there's a pistol on my hip. If the gamey wants to cite me go ahead but id rather pay or fight the ticket then get attacked or eaten by a cougar or a bear.

And to me... I feel like if I'm out hunting with a bow... I'm obviously not gonna shoot anything with a gun..?

If I were you if hunt a different a
Place, and carry a gun

This is different as you are on a US military installation and fall under different laws. The act of carrying a loaded pistol is almost universally verboten on military posts. Unless it is your issued duty weapon.

Second post refers to state law.
First and third posts refer to hunting on JBLM which is Federal.

My post (#2) was definitely in reference to Washington State hunting regs. The Base has their own rules.
Personally, I would not hunt in an area that said I can't have a weapon for protection. It all comes down to choice. I have to admit that I would be pretty nervous carrying a weapon in defiance of the law on a military base.
