WATER PROOFING FOR BOOTS

I have a pair of White's "Hunters" that are about 40 yrs old. I used a hair dryer to heat them up and then hand massaged some Pecard's boot dressing into them.  I used about a can and a half before I was done. With a reseal about every 5 yrs they still keep my feet dry.

Obenhaufs is good stuff. I use snow seal since i have a large quantitiy of it. I use a heat gun to warm the leather up and then smear it on then re heat. the heat really opens up the leather pores and sucks the snow seal in. Its worked pretty good for me here on the wetside for my work boots and my snow boots.

i have always used mink oil but am very curious as to how effective this stuff would work or last.... the commercial looks interesting but those boots have no walking creases, scuffs or wear wrinkles to show if it would run off them. Anyone used this stuff /review?

I used mink oil before I switched to goretex boots. I now use obenaufs and like it well enough. I tried snoseal and didnt care for it.

Bear grease. Also doubles' as the best grease for pie crusts!

I don't know the truth of it but have heard using beeswax based waterproofers like obenaufs and sno seal that you cannot resole the boots if the sole is glued on. Anybody know if this is true?

I just got some new Lowa's. Does anyone know if you're supposed to grease the Nubuck leather? I've always used Snoseal warming up the boots by the heater or in the dryer but not sure it's right for them.

I used to always seal my boots with something, SnoSeal in the old days. Now, I don't use much, keep them clean after a trip, some light leather dressing. I don't want to seal up the leather so much that it doesn't breathe, even with GoreTex on the inside of it. Count on the GoreTex for the waterproofing. I also use gaitors most of the time. If I hunted a lot where it was that wet I would use one of the new generation of rubber boots designed for hiking/hunting.

Whitey, I've been trying for years to get my Smokejumpers to seal with no luck. If you find a method that works for you I'd love to hear it. The only positive note about my Whites in wet weather/streams is that the water runs out nearly as fast as it runs in. 

What fair-chase said.  You're not going find anything to seal your Smokejumpers as they'll leak like crazy all around the sole stitching.  They're great boots, but not constructed with keeping water out in mind.
