first deer
« on: September 24, 2014, 03:33:42 PM »
I got my first deer on Saturday.  This is my third year hunting archery.  I've gotten close a few times, but never taken a shot at a deer.  We got out early and hunted until late morning - nothing.  We were heating up an early lunch when this doe walked in near our camp.  She was quietly feeding with her head behind some trees, so I was able to easily get within 30 yards before she noticed me.  My heart was beating so hard I remember being surprised that I could actually hear it. The funny part was that I didn't notice my friend's 7-year-old son following close on my heels the whole time!  When my arrow seemed to knock the deer over, this kid was cheering like he was watching the Seahawks or something.

I don't know if it was my nerves or shooting up hill, but my shot went a little high.  Luckily, the arrow clipped her left lung and went through the spine - she fell over right there.  Within seconds, I got another arrow through her and it was over quick.  We enjoyed barbecuing the tenderloins that night and the rest is in the freezer.
