Deer fever...
« on: October 05, 2014, 09:13:07 AM »
I think I officially have it.  This will be my 3rd year deer hunting.  I've been fishing my whole life.  Thought I'd never have a passion for anything else like that.  If I wasn't doing it, I was dreaming of alpine lakes and streams, salmon and steelhead head shakes, top water bass, saltwater cutthroat, fly fishing, spoons, spinners, jigs, massive strikes....  Any peice of water a happened to be driving by is immediately analyzed for fishing prospects. Perfection is often a nice summer evening boulder hopping my favorite small river and gracefully casting a small elk hair caddis into boulder pockets and ruffles and seam lines to eager trout.  Just me, deer and other wildlife, the singing and dancing waters, and beautiful little trout leaping out of the water doing various types of cartwheels.

Well, I took a break for a while.  After our 3 boys were born, I slowed down some.  But then we adopted 5 more in a short time out of foster care.  Life had a new purpose and fishing lost its luster.  I love sharing with others when I can.  Just doesn't 'own' me like it did.

So for the last few years I have started getting more into hunting.  With one of my boys mainly.  And I think it is getting serious...

The other evening while out helping coach my 12yr old's football team, I was looking down at some dirt and flattening out mole hills, when my heart skipped a beat.  Like seeing a huge steelhead role in a tailout... I spotted what looked like, for a split second, a deer track.  And I remembered that my boy and I would be heading out in a few days.  And I knew I had it.  Deer fever...

Sounds serious......better be thankful you only have a few more days to let the build up continue   :IBCOOL:. Chances are it will only get worse in the coming years  :chuckle:. Kids cerrtainly take control of your priorities ( I cannot imagine having 8) it is likely you will find many other hobbies as the kids get into them and yes, your old ones will fade for a bit, hopefully to be rekindled by one of your kids or maybe a grandkid in the future. Either way I am sure you will ejoy it all and so will those lucky kids !

I too have succumbed to this dreaded yet infallible disease known to the common man as dear fever.  Some I hear have built some sort of immunity to this.  I for one have been drooling at the thought of venison for quite some time.  I finally get my attempt after many years of remaining idle to harvest this delicacy once again.

On a serious note.  I havent been able to get out and scout on foot this season but since I have deer fever, I have been on Google Earth doing as much as possible to increase my odds.   Im going crazy at work right now.  As of 7am this morning my 2 weeks of vacation will start and the fever, I fear, will only get worse.  Good Luck to everyone this season and stay safe.

I feel the same way. I have dreams of reprods and clear cuts. Gravel roads that open to dear havens. Good luck this year.

Nobody's alone with this fever.  I have been having the attention span of about a Gnat :dunno: for a couple of days now especially where work is related.
