Hunting White-Tailed Deer in Thick Cover
« on: October 06, 2014, 04:34:51 PM »
Last season I jumped a deer in very dense cover where I typically hunt quail. Shortly after, I noticed great deer scrapes near the dense cover that the deer was bedded in. I made a mental note of the scrapes and tracks. This past Saturday, while quail hunting the opener, I was in this same area and jumped a monster white-tailed deer. He was bedded within 25 yards of the scrapes I found last season. He broke through the brush for about 25 yards and then paused and gave me a great broadside view. He slowly trotted off down the ravine and didn't seem to be too surprised or spooked. I had originally planned to hunt mule deer this season, but now am considering changing my mind. The ravine that he beds in is not very deep or wide, but it is very think, and is mostly surrounded by sage and sand. My longest view while looking in to the ravine is probably 50 yards. Any suggestions on hunting him in his bed? Is it too risky?

Find the trails in and out of the bedding area and set up off those and try to catch him coming and going. I have found the most successful method for whitetails is to find a travel route and just play the waiting game.
