GMU 460 and 466 Modern Elk Help
« on: October 08, 2014, 08:43:50 PM »
This is going to be my first year hunting elk. I live in Carnation and I know there are some big bull in 460. Am looking for any helpful hints, tips or suggestions on where I might start scouting. Thank you in advance.

its gona be crowded wherever you go.  Modern draws a pretty good crowd.  Find a spot where you can glass a couple of clearcuts.  Get there way before light, and let the crowd push the elk to you.

Those are 2 of the lowest general odds hunts out there.  460 there are a bunch of elk but they find the private land pretty fast.  You could buy a Hancock pass (if not sold out) or find isolated pockets in the national forest.
Most of the elk that are in 466 migrate down to the watershed or 454. Most of the access to the unit is in the high country and the roads can be sketchy on a mid summer day.
Not trying to be misleading (I will not be in either unit) but you may want to follow the masses to st Helens or sw Washington.  There is a reason that's where the majority of the hunters congregate.   :twocents:
