Where to start?
« on: October 19, 2014, 12:17:32 PM »
Hey,

I am new to the forum and have been interested in hunting awhile now. Sadly my dad never took me hunting, just took my brother out. For many reasons I am not able to learn from them so I was wondering if anyone would help by giving me a place to start (guides, videos, literature, forum posts, anything) ? I have my hunters education card but other than that I know nothing. I know its unlikely I get out this season but it would be awesome if I can get out next season!

Thanks,

what type of weapon are you thinking of using? what type of game? you can find quite a bit from just doing searches on the forum once you know what you want to hunt.

if you go to wsu (just guessing because of the pullman location), you might be able to find a hunting/shooting club. I know there is one for u of i in moscow, they might let you go to the events. you can always try to post on the hunting partners section, i'm guessing there are a few pullman people on the forum that might be willing to let you come with them just to watch this season or late hunt

Deer and Elk probably. I was hoping to use my families .300 winmag but I have heard that that might be a bit too much power to start and someone lost the bolt so I'll have to look for a new rifle anyway. I was thinking about getting a .30-06 but would be open to suggestions

Walmart has some good prices on rifle/scope combos. I saw some 270 and 30-06 Remingtons for $277 if I remember right. Pick up a rifle and get some trigger time with is so come next year you are comfortable, accurate, and confident in your shooting.  You can learn a lot just by reading the posts on here and paying attention to where people are hunting and shooting dear. Also, hit a library or pick up some books off E-bay or Amazon and do some reading.  Next summer and go out in the woods hunting with a camera. Take what you learn scouting around in the summer and transition from the camera to a rifle come fall.

you should go talk to some of the people at the tri-state in moscow (on the left just as you head into town, across from U of I campus). they have books related to hunting in that particular area. the people who work behind the gun counter are generally helpful, and you'll get to see pictures of animals harvested in the area. you can also check the board right as you walk in, sometimes there are group events for local hunters posted.
